Music Geek Track of the Day: Wavves Recreate Midnight Summer Madness on “Way Too Much”

For being classic California surf-punk slackers, Wavves are staying awfully busy this year. First, they released their collaborative LP with Cloud Nothings. Now they have another full-length coming, and they aren’t staying quiet about it.

Nathan Williams and his fuzz-filled friends shared “Way Too Much”, the lead single off their new album V, on Twitter. In announcing that, though, Williams started quite a bit of drama. His label, Warner Brothers, supposedly wanted to pull the track after he shared it, leading to a back-and-forth dispute about owner’s rights, much of which was invisible to the public. If they took the song down, he threatened to leak the whole album. “Its so obnoxious to work tirelessly on something and then have a bunch of ppl who just see me as a money sign go and fuck it all up,” Williams wrote.

All that fighting was worth it. “Way Too Much” is an energetic summer jam that’s tailor-made for drives to the beach. There’s more punk at the song’s core than the surf tunes they usually create. Still, Wavves are eager to get you moving. Williams uses his sweet sing-along voice to maximum effect before parting for a bubbly guitar solo that scratches its way down the frets. By the time it ends, our blood pressure is up 100%, but we’re okay with that.

Summer isn’t about intricate creations or perfectly-packed adventures. It’s about making memories during the mediocre, and Wavves do as accurate of a job representing that as possible. So flip “Way Too Much” on, grab a beach towel, and drive off into the sunset, reveling in the dark of summer’s neverending midnight madness. There’s no need to figure out your life’s purpose until the winter comes.
