TÄLÄ is a half-English, half-Iranian songwriter/sound collagist who blends underground dance elements with pop and Arabic music that she grew up listening to with her dad. When you listen to her new Alchemy EP, you are treated to a kaleidoscopic approach to pop music that references the above influences and then reaches beyond these touchstones to make bizarrely familiar, yet decidedly unique compositions. I sort of like to think of her music as the sonic equivalent of déjà vu–all the parts are in familiar places, but there is just something slightly off, maybe even eerie about it.
“Unfinished Business” is the closer of the EP and it seriously bangs. My favorite of her tracks to date, the song features skittering, frantic shakers (like a frustrated person trying to break a maraca) and excessively reverbed synth notes that sound like a submarine’s sonar pitch-shifting in a cave. And then the chorus hits and its like code-red, every-man-for-himself , dance party chaos. Like, I would choreograph a dance to this song if I trusted my body to move as fast as I am imagining it would have to (and if I knew how to choreograph, I guess? Maybe I can pick up some tips from that Backstreet Boys documentary that is coming out in January). Very excited to hear more from TÄLÄÂ in the new year, that is for certain.
