Only half a day left before the gluttony and forced conversations with your weird cousin (me!!!!) ensues. That means its time to really contemplate all the things that we can say that we are still thankful for, and though that might seem hard under the current circumstances, it is vital that we appreciate family and friends because what else is there really?
I love Big Star. I think Alex Chilton is a genius (check out his biography in our Holiday Gift Giveaway), but I always thought “Thank You Friends” was a campy song that didn’t really live up to the other gems in their discography (essentially everything on either of the first two albums #1 Record or Radio City) But today when I put this song on I couldn’t help feeling a bit overwhelmed as I prepared to travel to the midwest to see all the people who have supported me for so long and continue to do so.
You can either read Chiton’s song as tongue-in-cheek or as a farewell (the band would wind down shortly after their third album), but the sentiment poured out of my headphones in just the right way today–hope you all enjoy.
