Hey, remember that show Weeds? The one about a Mom who sold weed? It was on a network called Showtime a few years ago… The show-runner now has that show about that women’s prison… Anyway, the show did something that no other show I can readily think of (aside from the season-to-season changes of The Wire’s intro) had. Around season 2, it started gathering various artists to cover their theme song, “Little Boxes“, and then airing new versions every week. It was a fun little treat to look forward to each week. Surprisingly, Adult Swim has followed suit with the cartoon Squidbillies has done the same thing with their theme song.
Artists like Band Of Horses, The Drive-By Truckers, and Lambchop have covered the 31 second theme song, and the newest addition is a Nerdist homie: Neko Case. We had the lovely opportunity to host her on the Nerdist podcast almost exactly a year ago, and she’s even stopped by @Midnight. We love her. The cover is twangy, fiery, and it makes you wish this little number would last a full 3 minutes.
Would be nice to see more shows follow the leads of Weeds and Squidbillies (two programs I’d never thought would share a sentence but am happy to facilitate) and use the medium to showcase more of our favorite musicians.
What show would you like to see offer up their theme song to artist covers next? Let us know below, or tweet at us:Â @NerdistMusic!
