Oooo, very ballsy to call a song “Say My Name”. But ODESZA is really running game with this track, so I think Queen Bey, Kelly, and Michelle won’t be beefing with this electronic duo from Seattle any time soon (I am crossing my fingers so hard for that scenario that I can barely type).
“Say My Name” is both an accessible, punchy, synth-driven dance pop track at the same time that its a coruscating, atmospheric production. The emotional core of this song comes from guest vocalist Zyra and those yearning, clipped, vocal samples that precede the verses. It almost sounds like those manipulated pleas are preventing the singer from completing the titular exhortation. But finally we get the track’s climax when Zyra exclaims, “I want to dance with you!” This is truly a gem of the summer, and even though its almost September, I am pretty convinced that “Say My Name” will soundtrack those mid-autumn nights when the air smells like a campfire off in the distance. Is that only a Midwestern thing? It might be.
Check out the track below, and be sure to check out the rest of their upcoming project, In Return, which drops September 9 via Counter Records.
loving the new album
Her other collaboration on the album, “It’s Only” is also a gem. Loving this album.
