Music Geek Track Of The Day: Natalie Imbruglia Covers Daft Punk’s ‘Instant Crush’

Back in the mid-’90s, Australian pop import Natalie Imbruglia was the ultimate manic pixie dream girl as she entranced audiences with her heartbroken anthem, “Torn”. However, just as fast as she marched into our lives with her Delia*s platform flip-flops, she disappeared—until now.

Imbruglia is on the cusp of a comeback, thanks to the release of her upcoming album, Male, which features renditions of a bunch of tracks written by… you guessed it… men.

The first single is a cover of Daft Punk‘s “Instant Crush” off the electro legends’ 2013 album Random Access Memories.

In the original version, Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) sings the hook, though his vocals are nearly unrecognizable because they’re so heavily distorted. In a good way, of course.

Imbruglia’s musical homage to the dance track is much more intimate and stripped down. Not only has she un-disco-fied it, but she enunciates so well you can actually hear the lyrics, which are pretty intense.

Male will be released July 28 through Portrait/Sony.

  1. Tybonium says:

This reminds me of the album Strange Little Girls by Tori Amos. Though looking at the track list, I have got the impression that Tori was making more of a statement by picking riskier songs.

  2. jmage says:

This is the first I’ve heard of this song, original or this cover, and I love it.

  3. Allison says:

    I genuinely love this!

  4. Scott says:

After all these years those eyes are some of the best on the planet…who wins….got to go Daft Punk…I do own Left of the Middle and will admit that when it comes up in my mix. It does make me happy and take me back in time. Good for her to show up on the charts…I wish her the best..I hope that The Veronicas make a reappearance as well.

  5. rychu79 says:

Its good to see her make a comeback even if its just a cover album. Man that “Best New Artist” curse hit her hard.

  6. MJB says:

It’s pretty awkward to pull off a cover of a song like this in any other style, but this is alright. I enjoy it. It’s a little bit straightforward though. Not sure how to explain what I mean by that. There’s not really any surprise, but that’s not exactly a mark against it.
The chorus has a really surprising amount of power compared to the stoic demeanor of the original.
