Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Mr Noah’ by Panda Bear

It’s been a minute since we last posted about Animal Collective drummer and producer/sample collagist Panda Bear, a/k/a Noah Lennox, whose previous three solo albums have all been excellent, ranging from elegiac acoustic guitar music to ebullient, vintage-pop-sampling compositions that sound like they could have been songs at sleep away camp.

“Mr. Noah” is the first single since 2011’s Tomboy, and definitely has much sludgier bass sounds than we have come to expect from Lennox’s solo projects, though it sounds like a logical progression from Animal Collective’s last album Centipede Hz. Just as with every song Panda bear has released in the last five years, you’ll find yourself sort of chanting along (Ay, ay ay ay!) by the second time through–his lyrics, at least for me, are always secondary to his voice as a guttural, choral, or tender instrument.

The video below (shot on a crane?) is a vertigo-inducing mindfuck that mirrors the emotional whirlwind of the acrimonious breakup that is being documented. Feelings literally spin out of control as the (former) girlfriend throws all the (former) boyfriend’s shit out of her window. I was confused at first, but then I remembered that Panda Bear’s music has always been about distilling primitive feelings and reactions to fully understand the greater complexities they represent. Check out the video below and let us know what you think in the comments and on Twitter!

Panda Bear’s new album, Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper will be out January 13, and you can catch his brand new Mr Noah EP right here.
