Music Geek Track of the Day: Lorde’s “Flicker (Kanye West Rework)”

Rare is the movie soundtrack that garners as much excitement as the movie itself, but such is becoming the case with Lorde’s personally curated soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part I, due to be released on November 17th.

The teenage Lorde is an obvious choice for the teen-centric Hunger Games, her gloomy alt-pop matching the angsty, dark tonality of the series (also, it probably doesn’t hurt that she fits the studio’s main qualification: being the obligatory chart-topping musician to attach to their tent-pole franchise). But Lorde also proves to be a particularly auspicious match, admitting a genuine enthusiasm for the source material, and dedicating an amount of involvement and creativity beyond the typical, paycheck-oriented fare of most pop artists writing for when the credits roll.

Following the first release from the record, “Yellow Flicker Beat” (for which a music video was released just last week), we are now treated to the album’s newest release, and it’s…well, “Yellow Flicker Beat” again. To be correct, it’s “Flicker (Kanye West Rework)”, an adept remixing of the track by Yeezy, who here operates strictly as a producer. Continuing with the stripped-down, jagged minimalism of Yeezus, Kanye spotlights Lorde’s velvety voice, unobstructed from over-production. The track moves slowly and deliberately toward full orchestration, reminiscent of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’s “Runaway”.

The soundtrack’s eye-popping tracklist also features CHVRCHES, Charli XCX, Tove Lo, Simon Bon, Raury, Tinashé, Bat for Lashes, Grace Jones, XOV, Chemical Brothers, Miguel, and a curious collaboration between Lorde, Stromae, Pusha T, Q-Tip and HAIM.
