At this stage in his career, Donald Glover can do no wrong as far as I am concerned. Admittedly, I was not the hugest fan of his early Childish Gambino material (because the internet changed my opinion), but as of late, he has been proving his mettle as a live entertainer, singer, and probably a future EGOTer.
For the official Magic Mike XXL soundtrack, Glover, who stars in the film, recorded a smooth cover of Bruno Mars “Marry You”. Mars is an exceedingly talented vocalist, so trying to record an adequate cover is just a bassline difficult task. Though Glover demonstrated his vocal prowess on his recent jam “Sober”, I was a little nervous to hit play on this cover.
Turns out I had nothing to worry about. The electric groove and shimmering guitar chords complement Glover’s soft delivery perfectly, and the track swaddles you in a papoose of cotton balls. My only complaint is that the track feels a little short–perhaps a smart marketing ploy for everyone to have to hit the play button over and over.
In other Magic Mike XXL news, I sat down with Big Dick Richie (Joe Manganiello) himself for our new show Celebrity Playlist to talk about the weirdly dark strip club playlist that he listened to while making his documentary, La Bare. Be sure to check that out here and let me know what you think!
