Music Geek Track of the Day: Deerhunter is Finally Back in Our Lives with ‘Snakeskin’

I knew something is awry when Bradford Cox’s painted face turned into a dog.

Last week, indie rockers Deerhunter left a would-be inscrutable clue on their website–a clock counting down to Saturday night, complete with the above image. We had to imagine, however, that new music would somehow be involved in this weird dog-themed neural network come to life.

Lo! Behold! Deerhunter have indeed gifted us with a new song. “Snakeskin” is the first new music from the Atlanta-bred group since 2013’s Monomania. The track is a tightly produced, trance-inducing rock song that revisits familiar territory that the band strayed from on their last release. As Cox delivers spooky, mythologizing lyrics about a fictional character’s provenance, we are treated to visuals of the frontman in messy overalls, as he pulls a Hamlet and strangely fiddles with a human skull.

And that is when shit gets super weird. Cox, who must have been wearing green facepaint, has a host of weird textures and videos projected onto his face while interstitial shots of the titular subject matter flashes on-screen. Is this a dream? Is the apocalypse nigh? I guess we will have to wait for Deerhunter’s new album Fading Frontier to come out on October 16.
