A Sunny Day In Glasgow was probably the most inventive shoegaze band of the mid 2000s. Their debut album Scribble Mural Comic Journal still stands as one of the more boundary-pushing efforts within the genre, as it explored textures with a more distinctively contemporary sound than the touchstone predecessors like My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Slowdive. This wasn’t simply because they had more up-to-date studio equipment (though surely this was integral), it was that they broke the guitar driven sonics that had been left behind as the formula. If you have never listened to that album–go listen right now and you will have a new favorite, I promise.

Based on my fanboy obsession with this Philadelphia-based, sibling-comprised experimental band, I am ecstatic that A Sunny Day In Glasgow has a new album coming on June 24 “Bye Bye Big Ocean (The End),” for all its cacophonous rattling has a very eerie sense of symmetry and harmony. It sounds as though the band is performing in the center of a canyon basin and you are hearing their echoes while driving alongside the crater. Very into this, and looking extremely forward to the end of the month when I can listen to Sea When Absent.
