Today I received a text with just a YouTube link to “Best On” by Luca and Argentian singer Tei Shi. Then I received a followup text with just a heart emoji. Based on this nonverbal recommendation from a my friend whose music taste is generally on point, I knew I was in for a sensual treat.
“Best On”, with its errant digital chirps, and woozy, pulsating bass is basically a sexy two-and-a-half-minute chorus that patiently crescendos with harmonies from the talented singer. Channeling her inner Janet Jackson, Tei Shi sounds like a diva supported by a chorus of her own backing vocals and Luca’s spare, subtle production. This track actually would have been a very natural fit on her recent Verde EP, which was full of hushed electronics and showcase her verdant, radiant voice.
While I wait patiently for Tei Shi’s debut album, I hope that she releases more material that is the aural equivalent of the heart emoji in the interim. <3 this song, Tei Shi.
