There are BIG spoilers ahead for the upcoming six-episode revival of The X-Files! Youâve been warned!
If the haggard appearance of Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) in the first preview pictures from The X-Files wasnât a big enough tip-off, the Fox Network made it official at the Television Critics Association Press Tour.
Mulder and Scully (Gillian Anderson) are splitsville. Done. Finito. In other words, the romance is over. This became apparent in a new preview clip from the revival in which Scully refers to herself as Mulderâs âfriend and physicianâ as they had a huge argument about a new conspiracy. Notably, Mulder insisted that the new conspiracy was created by men, not aliens.
Over the course of The X-Files’ nine-season run, Mulder and Scullyâs were one of TVâs most shipped couples even though their relationship was strictly platonic and professional. In the eighth season, their intense friendship finally gave way to romance. Duchovny didnât stick around for the final season, but he came back for the series finale which ended with Mulder and Scully in bed as they contemplated the future.
In 2008, The X-Files: I Want To Believe movie also featured Mulder and Scully as a couple, and it gave them a slightly happy ending in the face of lingering threats. Presumably The X-Files creative team is ending the romance in order to give the series some added tension and to recreate some of the classic dynamic that the duo shared in the early seasons of the show.
Donât despair, Mulder & Scully shippers. Even though theyâre currently apart, thereâs still a good chance that they could reconcile by the end of the sixth episode. The X-Files will return to Fox on Sunday, January 24, 2016.
