It’s time to take more trips into time and spaceâof the animated varietyâwith that overly smart dog and the redhead kid who’s kind of a dunce. You can’t keep a good intellectual property down for long, and another proof of that is Netflix’s announcement that it will premiere a new half-hour animated series based on Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Originally, Mr. Peabody and Sherman were the main characters in “Peabody’s Improbable History,” a series of segments within the various iterations of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show in the 1960s. In them, the talking dogâthe smartest being in existenceâtraveled in time with a young dorky boy named Sherman to visit famous historical events.
The new series, cleverly titled The New Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show will be a strange departure for the duo, who were last seen in 3D animated form in DreamWorks’ 2014 feature film, Mr. Peabody & Sherman. This version, a 2D animated series consisting of 13 episodes and also produced by DreamWorks Animation, will find Peabody and Sherman hosting a late night comedy show (???) from their ritzy Manhattan penthouse. And as if that weren’t enough silliness for you, their guests will include people like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Edgar Allan Poe. It will also feature the titular duo going on new adventures thanks to Peabody’s WABAC Machine (pronounced Way-Back Machine).
Chris Parnell of SNL and Rick and Morty fame will provide the voice of Mr. Peabody while child actor Max Charles will reprise the role of Sherman which he played in the feature film. The episodes are set to premiere October 9th.
