Movie Morsels: ULTIMATE MARVEL MARATHON Preceding AGE OF ULTRON, POLTERGEIST Arriving Early, Diablo Cody Writes BARBIE

We’d like to think today’s Movie Morsels has a little something for everyone, including word on the longest movie marathon ever released in American theaters nationwide, a new and much earlier release date for the Poltergeist remake, the final piece in the Beauty and the Beast casting puzzle, the scoop on Diablo Cody and Ridley Scott’s surprising next projects, and more!

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers

Prepare yourselves, Marvel maniacs. As part of its promotions for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Disney has partnered with several of the nation’s leading theater chains–including AMC Theaters, Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark, Megaplex, Harkins and National Amusements–for an epic marathon of every Marvel Studios movie released thus far (yes, even Iron Man 2), titled “The Ultimate Marvel Marathon”. It begins on April 29th with Iron Man and ends the following day with the hotly anticipated Age of Ultron (opening everywhere on May 1st). Some chains will also host a double feature of the first Avengers and its sequel. Just visit each chain’s website for details.

Poltergeist

Poltergeist 3

They’re not here yet, but they’ll be here a little sooner than we thought. 20th Century Fox’s remake of Poltergeist will now be out two months sooner than planned, opening on May 22 (the same date as Tomorrowland‘s debut). The studio has also pushed back the release of its Melissa McCarthy comedy Spy to June 5, while moving its adaptation of Fault in Our Stars author John Green’s Paper Towns to July 24th.

Beauty and the Beast

Dan Stevens

After casting Lily James in the title role of Cinderella, Disney has turned to another Downton Abbey alum for the next live-action adaptation of one of its animated classics. Hot on the heels of the news that Luke Evans will play Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, we received word that Dan Stevens will play the Beast himself. The two will battle for the affection of Emma Watson’s Belle in director Bill Condon’s fantasy.

Barbie

Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody has just agreed to rewrite the screenplay of Barbie, based on the Mattel doll line. Producer Walter Parkes remarks, “Diablo’s unconventionality is just what Barbie needs. It signals we’re going for a legitimately contemporary tone. We’re bringing her on because she had great ideas, but even more importantly, she truly loves Barbie.” Cody might indeed write a good Barbie, but there’s no way on earth she can ever come up with a Ken to top that of Toy Story 3.

Self/Less

Director Tarsem Singh’s Ryan Reynolds-starring sci-fi thriller Self/Less isn’t due out until July 31, but Focus Features has enough confidence in it that the studio has just released the film’s first trailer. Self/Less stars Ben Kingsley as a dying billionaire who transfers his consciousness into the cadaver of Reynolds’ much younger character. Matthew Goode co-stars.

Flashman

Flashman

While much of the talk surrounding Ridley Scott lately has concerned his upcoming futuristic sci-fi projects like The Martian (out on November 25) or the controversial Blade Runner sequel, the director is about to go back to the nineteenth century for his next project, Flashman, based on George MacDonald Fraser’s period adventure novels, first written in the 1960s, about Harry Flashman, a scandalous antihero based on a real-life character introduced in the 1857 novel Tom Brown’s School Days.

  1. Taylor Anne says:

It would be way better if they showed them in chronological order according to the MCU’s timeline instead of just when they came out. (And I agree that incorporating all of AoS would be epic.)

  2. DisDawgs says:

I be doing the 11 movie marathon just in my own home.

  3. Cardsfanbj says:

That’s not an epic marathon. An epic marathon would include the episodes of Agents of Shield in between the movies, in the correct order.
