Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Eager to get your Force Awakens on ASAP? Help is on the way. Lucasfilm Publishing will release “at least twenty” books this fall to prepare fans of all ages for the seventh Star Wars film. And unlike most Star Wars literature set post-Return of the Jedi, which the company declared non-canonical last spring, the new books–known collectively as Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens — will be considered part of the saga’s official storyline. According to the publishing group’s Executive Vice President Andrew Sugerman, “The Force Awakens is an extraordinarily, heavily guarded storyline. To track it, a lot of top-secret meetings were happening up in San Francisco as we worked through this program.”

“The partnership with the story group and the editorial team always had to be true to the sanctity of the film while making sure that we find these moments to introduce hints, clues, and puzzle pieces. Without revealing what those pieces are, it will just allow readers to speculate about the new film: What could a location mean, or what could a character mean?”

Among the upcoming titles — which range from novels to sticker books for kids — is Del Rey’s Star Wars: Aftermath (possibly an epilogue to the original trilogy) and Marvel Comics’ prequel Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens and “another preview story told from C-3PO’s perspective.”

Frozen Fever

Just in case Olaf wasn’t cute enough for you, Disney is betting you’ll be charmed by his mini-snowmen brethren “the snowgies” in the Frozen sequel short Frozen Fever, debuting tomorrow, March 13, before the studio’s new live-action Cinderella. The critters (depicted in the new poster above) are literally borne — I kid you not — out of Elsa’s nose when she sneezes. That’s right: they’re snot snowmen. According to producer Peter Del Vecho, the filmmakers “wanted Olaf to remain pure, so quickly it evolved into these fun little snowballs we call ‘snowgies’ that bring a lot of mischief and fun to the short.”

Knights of the Round Table

With production underway on Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Round Table, the director has tweeted the first photo of star Charlie Hunnam as King Arthur…

Co-starring Jude Law as the villainous Vortigern, Djimon Hounsou as “Resistance leader” Bedivere, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Aidan Gillen and Eric Bana, the Knights of the Round Table will be called to order on July 22, 2016.

Pee-wee’s Big Holiday

The long-awaited third film to star Paul Reuben’s Pee-wee Herman, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, has just signed on True Blood star Tara Buck as its co-star. Produced by Judd Apatow and directed by John Lee (of “Inside Amy Schumer” fame), it begins production this month for a release on Netflix. The film will concern “a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger [that] inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny.”

The Blob

Speaking with Den of Geek, director Simon West has a few words about the title creature in his remake of The Blob: “The Blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that – much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito. This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It’ll be a much more sophisticated creature – because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense.” West also implies that we could see more than one monster, adding, “This thing’s come from another planet, and also, we don’t know how many there are.”

Mr. Holmes

Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr., eat your hearts out… After winning raves at the recent Berlin Film Festival, director Bill Condon’s chronicle of Sherlock Holmes’ final case, starring Sir Ian McKellen as the (now retired) world’s most famous consulting detective, has a U.S. release date. Mr. Holmes will see you on July 17th. Laura Linney co-stars in this adaptation of Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind.
