Movie Morsels: Marvel’s New SPIDER-MAN Heads Back to High School, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and JURASSIC WORLD Updates

Does Spider-Man function best as a high school teenager? Kevin Feige seems to think so, since the Marvel Studios chief is re-enrolling him in Midtown High after he joins the MCU in Captain America: Civil War. Plus, a new Jurassic World viral video introducing one of the film’s characters, word that Lando Calrissian may yet appear in a Disney Star Wars movie (!), a new Insurgent trailer, and more in today’s Movie Morsels!

Even more news has emerged in the wake of Sunday’s announcement that Marvel Studios is teaming up with Sony for a Spider-Man reboot that will incorporate the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe… We now hear that the new Spider-Man will again find himself in high school, and thus the search is on for a younger actor to replace Andrew Garfield. The Maze Runner‘s Dylan O’Brien and Percy Jackson star Logan Lerman are apparently both under consideration. Marvel is also busily searching for a new director to replace Marc Webb for the character’s next solo film in 2017. In the mean time, we’ll get to meet Spidey, along with the Black Panther, in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. There’s a possibility that, rather than Peter Parker, the wallcrawler’s alter ego this time around could be the comics’ Miles Morales. In any case, the plan is “to spend more time in [Midtown High] and explore his awkward relationship with other students while fighting crime out of the classroom.” We’re also told that Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six project is, for the time being, still moving forward.

Stay tuned for more details on today’s Nerdist News.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Lando

While it’s unlikely at this point that Billy Dee Williams’ Lando Calrissian will show up in J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, the veteran actor has, in the wake of his guest appearance in TV’s Star Wars Rebels, hinted he’s entered discussions about appearing in another upcoming Star Wars sequel or spinoff movie. “But I uh… I may very well… I have a feeling I’m going to show up [in a movie]. There’s nothing I can really discuss about it at this stage,” Willaims tells Cinelinx.

Jurassic World

Vincent D’Onofrio is having himself a busy year. The actor’s set to debut as the Kingpin in Netflix’s Daredevil, and as Vic Hoskins, head of InGen Security, in this summer’s Jurassic World. A new viral video introducing his role in the latter has just arrived online. Jurassic World — co-starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and a hella lotta dinosaurs — is out in 2D, 3D, and IMAX on June 12th.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades

While advance reviews say that the film is by no means Fifty Shades of Great, the box office is still bracing itself for the arrival of E.L James Twilight fan fiction turned BDSM bestseller when it hits theaters worldwide this Friday, February 13th. Over in the UK, the staff of hardware store B&Q has “been told how to prep for a big demand in rope, cable ties and tape.” Yes, The Telegraph has published “a leaked memo” stating employees at the national DIY chain have been asked to prepare themselves for customers awkwardly asking about certain, ahem, products — and to read James’ book in order to know just what the hell they’re talking about. Oh, to be a UK hospital worker this weekend…

  1. RobotShlomo says:

Look for the keywords people; “possibility that”. “… could be”. They’re hopping on the Miles Morales bandwagon, and SPECULATING in order to generate web hits. Speculation is not part of a reporter’s job. When you speculate you are not reporting news, you are CREATING news.

If they’re already naming names as far as actors, then they’ve already decided it’s going to be Peter Parker.

  2. DarthJay says:

Did anyone else notice that in that Jurassic World video they mentioned that the park was on “Nublar” ?? That’s the same island the original movie took place on, so I hope we see some remnants of that.

  3. Walter says:

Stop trying this BS “appeal” to the young audience!!!!!! I watched Indian Jones when i was a kid and didn’t care that he wasn’t my age, or Flash Gordon. Young people don’t need heroes their age to get into it! It’s such a lazy marketing ploy. Please stop!  Kevin Feige you’re better than this.

    • Christian says:

I really don’t think it’s an “appeal” to young audiences. Peter Parker got bitten at 15 years old. He’s always been just a young guy.

  4. kevin says:

Not sure why they feel the need to keep going younger.  They should do a 30 year old spider man.

  5. George says:

It seems unlikely they are planning on doing Miles Morales if they are actually looking at Dylan O’Brien or Logan Lerman to play Spider-Man.  It seems like those two rumors contradict each other.

    • Taylor says:

Unless they are, I hope you are sitting down for this, going to completely ignore race and cast another white dude in a poc role.
