Movie Morsels: James Gunn Confirms Vin Diesel Back for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2

We still have almost two years to go until we can all enjoy James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (for my money, the Marvel movie in development that’s most worth waiting for). So you can be sure we’ll be savoring every last scrap of news about the project in Movie Morsels. But if for some reason Guardians isn’t enough for you, we’ve also got a new trailer for the theatrical release of The Hobbit Trilogy Extended Editions, word on Joaquin Phoenix and Anne Hathaway‘s next genre projects, and trailers for Ed Helms and Michael Caine’s latest.

Lest any Guardians of the Galaxy fan be harboring doubt, director James Gunn has officially gone on record to confirm that, yes, Vin Diesel will be back as everyone’s favorite talking tree in the sequel to last year’s blockbuster. Filming on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is expected to start in February or March of next year, for a May 5, 2017 release.

In other Groot news… In case you missed it, Today has a must-read story about how Rocket Raccoon’s best buddy helped one young man overcome his speech problem. We are Groot indeed.

Untitled M. Night Shyamalan Movie

Joaquin Phoenix in Spike Jonze's 'Her'

After teaming up for 2002’s Signs and 2004’s The Village, actor Joaquin Phoenix (pictured above in Her) and director M. Night Shyamalan are joining forces for a third time, for an as-yet untitled film from producer Jason Blum (who partnered with Shyamalan for The Visit). The movie will start shooting in Philadelphia, where most of the director’s films have been shot, in November.

The Shower

Anne Hathaway got serious about science fiction in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. But the actress is looking to explore the lighter side of the genre in the just-announced The Shower, a sci-fi action comedy that Hathaway will produce with her husband Adam Shulman. The script, which made Hollywood’s annual “Blacklist” of best un-produced screenplays last year, begins “during a baby shower, when the guests find themselves witnessing a meteor shower that turns men into aliens—forcing the women to fight to save themselves and the entire world.” The search for a director is now underway.

Love the Coopers

Is it too early to start talking about Christmas? Not if you’re a Hollywood studio that wants to start generating buzz for its holiday offering, like the Yuletide family comedy Love the Coopers. I Am Sam director Jessie Nelson oversees an all-star cast, including Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Olivia Wilde, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, Marisa Tomei, Ed Helms, Alan Arkin, and June Squibb. Love the Coopers rolls into theaters on November 13th.
