Movie Morsels: Hilarious New VACATION Red Band Trailer, Amy Poehler to Star in Basketball Comedy

It’s been a scorcher of a July week for most of us, folks, but we’re almost through it. So let’s celebrate with today’s Movie Morsels, in which we’ve got the latest and raunchiest trailer for the new Vacation with Ed Helms and Christina Applegate, along with an update on Dwayne Johnson‘s Rampage, news on Amy Poehler‘s next film, trailers for the indie thrillers Zipper and One & Two, and more!

Vacation

The latest red band trailer for the Vacation reboot is chock full of bad behavior, and that’s a good thing. Written and directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the July 29 release stars Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann, Chris Hemsworth, Charlie Day, Skyler Gisondo, Steele Stebbins, and Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo as Clark and Ellen Griswold.

“Too bad. I would have shot you right off that fucking horse.” Now that’s what I’m talking about.

Rampage

Dwayne Johnson

It looks like The Rock will be reteaming with his San Andreas director Brad Peyton for Rampage, New Line’s adaptation of the ’80s Midway arcade game. Word is that in the 2017 release “the focus will be consistent with the game, as three giant monsters—a gorilla, a lizard and a wolf—wreak havoc on major cities and landmarks across North America, with Johnson standing in their path.”

Untitled Amy Poehler Basketball Comedy

Amy Poehler, ACOD

Comedy goddess Amy Poehler is set to star in and produce an as yet untitled basketball comedy for Universal. Poehler “will play a once-promising basketball coach who is asked to lead an NBA team.” Ike Barinholtz will also star in the film, and co-write the screenplay with David Stassen.

Zipper

Patrick Wilson stars as a federal prosecutor whose affair with an escort winds up threatening his family and career in Zipper, co-starring Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey, Dianna Agron, Ray Winstone, John Cho, and Richard Dreyfuss. Here’s the trailer for the Mora Stephens-directed thriller, opening in theaters and on demand on August 28.

A Better You

A Better You

Veep star Matt Walsh is carving out a second career for himself as a director of indie comedies. His second feature, A Better You, about a hypnotherapist (played by Neighbors‘ Brian Huskey), who “practices an unusual and jarring method” and winds up in need of some therapy himself, has just been picked up for distribution by FilmBuff, which will release it in select theaters and VOD on October 9. The film co-stars Horatio Sanz. Here’s my interview with Matt Walsh about A Better You from this year’s Santa Barbara Film Festival.

One & Two

Finally today… Two of TV’s most promising young actors, Mad Men‘s Kiernan Shipka and Homeland‘s Timothée Chalamet, play siblings who possess the power to teleport themselves (complete with a familiar “BAMF!”) in IFC Films’ One & Two. The only problem is that their domineering father, played by Defiance star Grant Bowler, isn’t too happy about it. Shipka’s fellow Mad Men alumn Elizabeth Reaser (who plays the waitress with whom Don Draper is smitten in the show’s final season, and who also appeared in Twilight) co-stars. Here’s the trailer for the offbeat, oddly poetic-looking film, arriving in theaters and on digital and VOD on August 14th.
