Movie Morsels: DOCTOR STRANGE’s Mystery Woman Revealed?, Dark Knight’s Age in BATMAN V SUPERMAN Announced

Smile, America! The last week of July is almost over, August is waiting in the wings, and things are bound to get…cooler? Okay, maybe not. But we can still enjoy today’s Movie Morsels, with the latest word on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, images from Ridley Scott’s The Martian, some intriguing news regarding a longtime Marvel hero’s possible appearance in Doctor Strange, a report on who will direct the adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s, a new Black Mass poster, and the red-band trailer for Michael Bay‘s latest 13 Hours!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v Superman

Wondering what the Dark Knight of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s age might be, as well as his relationship with the members of Suicide Squad? The answer is in the latest issue of Empire, with quotes from Ben Affleck and director Zack Snyder.

“We are playing him 45 or 46,” says Snyder. “He has been Batman for 20 years. All the history is there.”

“Initially” says Affleck, “I thought, ‘I’m older, it doesn’t seem like the right sort of fit for me.’ Then Zack pitched me his concept for this older, more broken, kind of f**ked up Batman. It was something we haven’t seen. We have seen that Batman is willing to cross the line to protect people. That vigilantism has been a part of his character all along, and we are tapping into that mentality when faced by something as potentially as deadly as Superman.”

“We want to assume,” adds Snyder, “that Batman has reached this point in his life and career as a superhero, and Superman represents a sort of philosophical change. He is a paradigm shift for Batman: ‘I’ve been fighting criminals all my life, trying to find justice, and now I am confronted with a concept that is transcendent to me.’ In the face of Superman, a man robbing a bank doesn’t matter.”

According to Comic Book Movie, “The magazine reveals that Batman does indeed have history with The Joker and Harley Quinn, and indeed all of the criminals in Belle Reve who will ultimately make up Task Force X in Suicide Squad. Batman is responsible for putting them all in there.”

Doctor Strange

Night Nurse

Now here’s some interesting news: The folks behind Netflix’s Daredevil were planning on using Marvel’s fabled “Night Nurse” (a.k.a. Linda Carter, pictured above in her debut comic) in the on-demand network’s first superhero show, until they learned, says first season showrunner Steven DeKnight, “The feature side had plans for her down the road”.

“That was the only time we ran into a conflict,” adds DeKnight. “So we just used another name.” That other name, as fans now know to be Claire Temple, is played by Rosario Dawson. So where does that leave the studio’s plans for the Night Nurse? Well, with the character closely associated in recent years with Stephen Strange, and with the Doctor Strange movie reportedly courting Rachel McAdams as its female lead, might we see the Night Nurse make her screen debut when the first film devoted to Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and directed by Scott Derrickson, opens on November 4, 2016? Strange-r things have happened!
