Movie Morsels: DEADPOOL Casting Update, BIG HERO 6’s FROZEN Easter Eggs

Two familiar faces join Ryan Reynolds in Fox’s Deadpool, while Big Hero 6 reveals its numerous references to Frozen (and, boy, do we feel foolish for missing these in theaters!). Plus, the latest image from The Man from U.N.C.L.E., trailers for Ethan Hawke’s Good Kill and David O. Russell’s Accidental Love, and more in today’s Movie Morsels!

Deadpool

Miller

With Fox’s Ryan Reynolds-starring Deadpool now moving full-steam ahead towards its February 12, 2016 release date, the Tim Miller-directed, Lauren Shuler Donner-produced film has recruited its first new cast members — TJ Miller (pictured above in The Goodwin Games) and Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones). Miller — who made his Marvel movie debut in Big Hero 6 — will have a humorous role “to compliment Deadpool, who often breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to the audience.” Skrein’s role has yet to be revealed, but whoever he plays he can rest assured he’ll be in a more entertaining film (and a more faithful comic adaptation) than Deadpool’s screen debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Big Hero 6

And speaking of Big Hero 6, Disney has just released a new video for this fall’s super-team saga — due out on Digital HD/Disney Movies Anywhere February 3rd and Blu-ray on February 24th — spotlighting the film’s numerous Easter eggs, which nod to the studio’s previous animated release (a little film called Frozen).

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

We’ve not seen much yet from Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of the 1960s cult fave spy-fi TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. But USA Today has just released a new image of stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, as CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin, snuggling up on a scooter somewhere in Europe. Let the slash fiction begin! The Guy Ritchie-directed period film — co-starring Hugh Grant, Jared Harris, and Alicia Vikander — opens on August 14th.

Ant-Man

Ant-Man

No more teasing — just trailers. Last night, during Agent Carter, we got our first taste of Marvel’s Ant-Man and boy does it look good:

Good Kill

Ethan Hawke’s been a busy beaver lately, hasn’t he? The actor’s Boyhood is one of the leading contenders for the Best Picture Oscar, his sci-fi thiller Predestination arrives in theaters this Friday, January 9th, and now we’ve got the first international trailer for his drone warfare drama Good Kill, written and directed by Andrew Niccol. The film, which likens war in 2015 to a first-person shooter game, co-stars January Jones as Hawkes’ wife. A release date has not yet been set by distributor IFC.

Accidental Love

Formerly known as Nailed, David O. Russell’s Accidental Love is finally getting a limited theatrical and VOD release on February 10th. But since Russell left the production back in 2010 when it encountered budget problems, the American Hustle helmer replaced his name with the pseudonym “Stephen Greene.” Adapted by screenwriter Kristen Gore from her novel Sammy’s Hill, the romantic comedy stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, James Marsden, Tracy Morgan, Catherine Keener, James Brolin, Kirstie Alley and Paul Reubens. Here’s the trailer…

The Bad Batch

Girl Walks

Indie director Ana Lily Amirpour will continue her foray into genre filmmaking with her follow-up to this year’s much talked about Iranian vampire movie A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (pictured above). The British-born Amirpour’s sophomore effort will be The Bad Batch, “a dystopian love story set in a Texas wasteland,” from Annapurna Pictures and VICE.

I really REALLY hope that TJ Miller winds up providing the voiceovers for Deadpool’s inner monologue. Because I think a TJ Miller/Ryan Reynolds snark-off sounds like the best thing ever.
