Saw

“Hello. Do you want to play a game?” Lionsgate is betting you do, and that even though the Saw franchise is just ten years old there’s a fair amount of you feeling nostalgic since Saw 3D capped the series in 2010. The studio is releasing 2004’s original Saw for just one week, starting at 10 PM on Thursday, October 30th. That’s right, just one day before Halloween, you can wake up, eat a bowl of Count Chocula, buy some trick ‘r treat candy, and then head for the theater to watch (*spoilers*) Cary Elwes cut his leg off. Ah, good times. Here’s the official tenth anniversary trailer…

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend

You think it’s been a long time since the first Saw? It’s been fourteen long years since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon debuted in theaters across North America, forcing your grandparents to read subtitles and your kid brother to suffer through interminably long love scenes while waiting for the next wire fu fight to break out. But the sequel, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, based on Silver Vase, Iron Knight, the fifth book in Wang Du Lu’s Crane-Iron Pentalogy (the original Crouching Tiger was based on the series’ fourth volume), will descend upon us on August 28, 2015. The film will mark the first major theatrical release to premiere simultaneously in IMAX theaters and on Netflix, which has cut an exclusive deal with The Weinstein Company (who won the rights from Sony). Michelle Yeoh returns to her role of unlucky-in-love Yu Shu-Lien, and is joined this time around by Donnie Yen, who plays Silent Wolf. Wu Sia fans will be most intrigued, however, to know that famed martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix, almost every Jet Li movie ever) is in the director’s chair. [Deadline]

Clerks III

In the wake of Tusk‘s underwhelming box-office performance, Kevin Smith fans might be worried about the fate of the director’s long-gestating Clerks III. Well, worry no more! Smith says that Tusk impressed just the right people to secure financing for the final film in his New Jersey convenience-store trilogy. Speaking about Tusk on his most recent Hollywood Babble-On Podcast, Smith remarked…

“Everything in my life would suck right now if I hadn’t made that movie. I’m back in movies now. I’ve got three lined up, and this is the fucking grand news. Tusk was the absolute bridge to Clerks 3. Because of Tusk, I got my financing for Clerks 3. It was Tusk. It was people going ‘Holy Fuck! What else do you have?’ And I was like, Clerks 3. Done. So everybody that’s like, ‘He failed, he failed,’ thank you I failed into Clerks 3.”

Left Behind

The Devil wants you to see the upcoming Nicolas Cage-starring adaptation of Left Behind. No, really, Beelzebub is cool with it. He just doesn’t want you to bring any non-believers. A quote from Old Scratch himself adorns the latest poster for the apocalyptic film, unveiled on its Facebook page. Here’s the ad in all its end-of-days glory…

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1

Lionsgate has just released a series of character portraits from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, due on November 21st. Among the shots of the returning Jennifer Lawrence, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks, and Woody Harrelson are photos revealing a handful of the new faces we’ll see in the series third installment, which you can view below. In descending order, we’ve got propo cameraman Pollux (Elden Henson), production assistant Messalla (Evan Ross), propo director Cressida (Natalie Dormer), Pollux’s brother Castor (Wes Chatham), and President Alma Coin’s right-hand man, Boggs (Mahershala Ali). Magic Mike XXL

The sequel to 2012’s surprise hit comedy-drama Magic Mike may not have Steven Soderbergh at the helm or star Matthew McConaughey, who’s apparently just a little bit busy they days (yeah, I really liked Fool’s Gold too). But it has got returning star Channing Tatum, along with his Magic co-stars Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, and Adam Rodriguez Read. Now we hear it’s got a fresh crop of new actors you might have heard of. Joining Tatum and company will be Andie MacDowell, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Amber Heard, Donald Glover, and Elizabeth Banks. Director Gregory Jacobs’ film is dancing its way into your heart on July 1st, and will retain the multi-talented Soderbergh as director of photography. I’m especially thrilled that Glover has signed on, since it will give him the opportunity to revisit his “sexy Dracula” persona from Community. [JoBlo]
