Captain America: Civil War

*Potential spoiler alert* With the much-anticipated Captain America: Civil War hitting theaters on May 6, 2016, we’re right in the middle of rumor season. The latest rumbling about Marvel’s next superhero extravaganza is that Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland)–who’s here introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe–will be calling on the services of one Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) to create his world-famous web-shooters. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this, since I’ve always liked the idea that while fate got Peter Parker started on the road to Spidey, he completed the journey through his own ingenuity. But perhaps Stark will only lend an assist in constructing Parker’s web-shooters, while Parker himself will conceive of and design them. In any case, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, as well as screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, haven’t let us down yet.

Spider-Man

Speaking of Spider-Man, still promoting his new film Cop Car, director Jon Watts has a few things to say about actor Tom Holland’s casting as Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man reboot… “It feels like he’s the right age, he has the right level of enthusiasm and a little bit of confidence, but a lot of insecurity mixed into that. On top of nailing the character, he can also do a standing backflip.”

Regarding his sudden move from low-budget indie to studio tentpole, the director remarks, “You have to think about what story you want to tell, and what’s the best way to tell it. The idea that there are no real limitations is exciting, but I think you have to apply your own limitations to make sure you’re telling the right kind of story.”

Knock Knock

For those who thought Fatal Attraction was a far too subtle parable about the dangers of marital infidelity, we now have the Keanu Reeves-starring thriller Knock Knock; about a devoted family man who lends a hand to two young single women, only to have his hospitality come back to bite him in the ass. Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas co-star in the October 9th release, directed by Eli Roth. Here’s the film’s latest trailer from Lionsgate…

Rebel in the Rye

Nicholas Hoult on Top Gear

Nicholas Hoult has himself quite a few films we’re looking forward to, including next summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse. But one title has just shot to the top of the list: Rebel in the Rye, in which the actor will be play the late J.D. Salinger in a biopic about the famously reclusive author. Empire creator Danny Strong, whose writing credits include The Butler, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and the upcoming Eddie Murphy biopic, will both write and direct the film, adapted from Kenneth Slawenski’s J.D. Salinger: A Life.
