Movie Morsels: BATMAN V SUPERMAN Details, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN’s Next Leading Lady, SKULL ISLAND Casting

With its release a mere three days away, we’ve got one more behind-the-scenes look at The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies for you in today’s Movie Morsels. As well as intriguing news on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Skull Island, as well as the trailer for Christian Bale’s next project!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Man of Steel

Wondering how Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will address the events of Man of Steel? We have word that “the main action takes place a couple of years after the end” of Zack Snyder’s first Superman film, and that Clark Kent and Lois Lane are now living together. Dawn of Justice will apparently also deal with fan complaints about the Man of Steel‘s highly destructive Superman by having Supes assure one criminal, “I won’t snap your neck, I’m going to take you to prison,” albeit before later threatening to break the villain’s back. Man of Steel‘s General Swanwick will also return, and state that Superman will move the big battle with Doomsday “away from populated areas because he’s a hero, and that’s what heroes do.”

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Director Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, based on the Mark Millar-penned comic book The Secret Service, looks to restore some of the OTT humor to the super-spy genre that the James Bond franchise has largely abandoned in recent years. Fox has just released a new featurette focusing on the film’s “New Recruits”. Kingsman arrives to fight for queen and country on February 13, 2015.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

It’s okay, admit it — you want one more Hobbit video before you return to Middle-earth one last time this Friday, December 19th, for The Battle of the Five Armies — don’t you? It’s perfectly understandable, so don’t feel guilty about watching the following IMAX featurette on Peter Jackson’s Tolkien swan song.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Disney will soon reach a final decision on who will set sail with Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow when he embarks on his next voyage in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales. The list of potential leading ladies apparently now stands at five: Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter), Alexandra Dowling (Hammer of the Gods), Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner), Jenna Thiam (the French drama Vie sauvage), and Gabriella Wilde (Carrie). The character to be cast, whose name has not yet been revealed serves as “a romantic interest to ‘Henry,’ a British soldier that will played by The Giver and Maleficent star Brenton Thwaites.” Rounding out the cast for directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will be the returning Geoffrey Rush and Javier Bardem (as new villain Captain Brand). Pirates 5 sails into theaters everywhere on July 7, 2017.

Kong: Skull Island

JK Simmons

In other casting news, Fox’s King Kong spin-off Kong: Skull Island has secured its latest actor — the justly celebrated J.K. Simmons. Currently tearing up the screen in one of this awards season’s favorites Whiplash (pictured above), Simmons will co-star with Tom Hiddleston when the Jordan Vogt-Roberts-directed film, focusing on Kong’s island home, arrives in theaters on March 10, 2017.

Knight of Cups

One of mainstream cinema’s most unpredictable actors — Christian Bale — has teamed up with one of its most highly regarded directors — Terrence Malick — for Knight of Cups. FilmNation has just released a trailer for the upcoming drama, featuring Bale as “a bewildered man in a quandary with how to lead his life now that he’s become part of life in the fast lane in Hollywood.” Natalie Portman, Freida Pinto, and Cate Blanchett co-star in what looks to be a meditation on greed and excess to rival The Wolf of Wall Street, albeit a good deal more elegiac, as per usual with Malick. Knight of Cups will ride into February’s Sixty-fifth Berlin International Film Festival.
