Hey, kids! How much action, adventure, and excitement are ya looking for?!… Sorry, slipped into Stan Lee mode there for a second. But who can blame me when we’ve got the latest from Batman v Superman, X-Men: Apocalypse, Pixar’s Inside Out, Ready Player One, and Toho’s next Godzilla movie — all of it here to welcome you back from the weekend in today’s Movie Morsels!
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
It looks like Zack Snyder’s superhero epic has finished shooting. Eight months after principal photography began, cinematographer Larry Fong posted the following on Instagram…
“There’s been a lot of speculation as to what we’re looking at in that video, aside from some really cool bits of snow landing on something. Some say it’s an article of Batman’s attire…”

X-Men: Apocalypse
Oscar Isaac has a few illuminating things to say about just how menacing his portrayal of the titular mutant uber-villain in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse will be. The Force Awakens actor remarks, “He can be anything, he can do anything â so those aspects⦠I think of the idea of the first mutant and the idea that he wouldnât be called a mutant back then. What would he be? God. He would be a god on Earth. And he wouldnât think of himself as a mutant. Thatâs just descriptive â itâs not really an explanation of what it is. Because weâre mutants too. Humans are mutants, everythingâs a mutant â things that evolve. So Iâm playing with what that is and encompassing that in someone that has these kinds of powers.”
“Itâs a character that I always just loved â just because it freaked me out. I was really into anything that dealt with end times and being left behind and the Four Horsemen. The imagery in the Book of Revelation is crazier than any comic book youâll ever read. The beast with the seven heads, angels⦠itâs the trippy-est stuff. Itâs crazy imagery, and so that always stuck with me. And then you had a comic book that was trying to have a character that encompassed that feeling. So, for me, he always has the feeling of the Book of Revelations.”
Isaac adds, “Itâs safe to say Iâll be going to the gym.”
Godzilla
If Gareth Edward’s Godzilla didn’t set your world on fire, you might not have long to wait for another take on the atomic kaiju. Toho, the studio behind the original Japanese film series, is gearing up to produce another giant monster epic of their own. “The movie is scheduled to begin production in the summer of 2015 and bow theatrically in 2016, Toho sources have revealed. Details, including director and cast, have yet to be announced. The inspiration is the success of Gareth Edwardâs 2014 Godzilla, which earned $525 million worldwide and JPY3.2 billion ($26 million) in Japan, with Toho and Warner Bros. Japan co-distributing.
“Toho has launched what it calls the Godzilla Strategic Conference (Godzi-Con), a committee of studio executives and directors whose aim is to reboot the Godzilla brand, including the new Godzilla pic. The head of the new Godzilla project, veteran producer Taichi Ueda, told the press that, though Toho will not spend the $200 million reportedly lavished on the American Godzilla, ‘The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood.’ Ueda added that Toho hopes to make Godzilla a character that ‘will represent Japan and be loved around the world’ by the time of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”

Ready Player One
Turns our Christopher Nolan isn’t the only director Warner Brothers is looking at to helm its adaptation of Ernest Cline’s sci-fi novel Ready Player One. The studio is also discussing Robert Zemeckis, Peter Jackson, Edgar Wright and Matthew Vaughn. “According to Ainât It Cool, Zemeckis is the top choice because of ‘how heavily his work is referenced in the book. It would be him revisiting the stuff from his heyday that we all fell in love with him for, and would probably the closest weâd ever get to a Zemeckis-directed BTTF 4.”
Inside Out
The animation website Cartoon Brew has found an amazing new limited edition poster for director Pete Docter’s Inside Out (due on June 19, 2015). Available only in France, it’s not just the best publicity image released yet for the film, but one of the very best posters I’ve ever seen for a Pixar movie.
