More Mike Birbiglia, TV Giants, and an Olympic Jumper: The Week In Podcasts

I’m gonna keep this brief again because I have a busy weekend ahead of me (and by “busy,” I mean baseball, even if it IS Phillies-Padres. Say what you will, but they’re both still in the major leagues). This week on the Nerdist Podcast Network, we had this for you:

Mike Birbiglia visited the Nerdist Podcast for a fourth time (!), this one to promote his latest movie, Don’t Think Twice, which is about an improv troupe and which you should see. It’s an hour-long deep-dive into comedy with one of the sharpest minds in the business.

In the Pantheon of greatest TV shows ever, you’d be safe in putting The Wire in there, and you could make arguments for Homicide: Life on the Street and St. Elsewhere and Oz. So The Writers Panel featuring a talk with David Simon and Tom Fontana is a really big deal. That was this week’s edition, recorded at the ATX Television Festival in June, moderated by Beau Willimon of the U.S. House of Cards. Television nerds, this one is unmissable.

With the Olympics nigh,The Jonah Keri Podcast had a great guest who knows whereof he speaks on Olympic stuff: Will Claye, long jumper, triple jumper, medalist, rapper, designer… he pretty much does everything, and the show’s a great introduction to a multi-talented person. And on Friday, Jonah interviewed Kelsie Whitmore and Stacy Piagno, both signed to independent minor league baseball’s Sonoma Stompers.

Guests: Charles Phoenix, master of mid-century pop culture and slide show king, bringing his enthusiasm to Maltin on Movies; Chris Thayer for his umpteenth visit to You Made it Weird; Dan Avidan (Ninja Sex Party, Game Grumps on a technically challenged Legacy Music Hour; Molly McAleer (2 Broke Girls writer, Hello Giggles co-creator) on Love, Alexi; Sarah Colonna recapping The Bachelorette finale with Arden and Erin on Will You Accept This Rose?; Epic Rap Battles of History‘s Epic Lloyd and artist Mary Doodles on Pop My Culture; and actor-producer Andrew Burlinson as the latest Boy of Summer on The JV Club.

More: Dan and Razzle hostful-ing it up on Today We Learned; Alison telling us how she almost lost her dog on Half Hour Happy Hour; Jackie and Laurie live (on tape) from New York on The Jackie and Laurie Show; Pro You with another live experience and a Tom solo show; A look at the Archie comics relaunch on Nerdist Comics Panel; Another Family Show (part 1) on The Todd Glass Show; and Jess semi-soloing with an assist from Aristotle’s report on the Guillermo Del Toro exhibit at LACMA on Bizarre States.

All that and more will be found at the Nerdist Podcast Network homepage and Facebook page, so go, listen, like, subscribe. You know the drill. And they make great companions when you have a long weekend drive ahead of you — like, say, from L.A. to Petco Park. That’s a long slog even after Comic-Con’s over.
