Great: There will be more Mad Men, according to AMC, which has announced an order for the show’s fifth season.
Not great: You won’t see them until at least 2012. Based on the timeline, we’ll be pushing into Summer of Love territory. Don Draper with long hair and a Nehru jacket? Joan Holloway in granny glasses and tie-dye? Bert Cooper on acid? Or will it really be like 1967 was on Madison Avenue, still short hair and suits, trying desperately to get a grasp on the cultural change that…
…ah, whatever, that’s Matt Weiner’s department. We just watch. Eventually.
But the scary news is that the delay is about Weiner’s contract, which is in contentious negotiations and involve, Weiner told the New York Times, the network wanting to cut two cast members and cut two minutes from each episode, the former to save money and the latter to add more spots. He’s not happy with that. And so, the standoff.
Which leaves us, beyond the surface news (a fifth season!), with the bottom line that things aren’t yet settled. You can wait a little longer, can’t you?

Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the images on this blog
loading? I’m trying to figure out if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.
I’m going to sit here slumped over my Manhattan, garnish it with tears, and just mumble the word “Playgrounds” over and over again.
Cast cuts? Didn’t they do that last season? They dropped a number of characters going into Sterling-Cooper-Draper-Price, and it can be expected that it’s just Sterling-Draper-Price at this point. So there’s someone gone right there. Anyone else would be ridiculous.
Mad Men basically prints money for AMC at this point. I don’t get why they want to muck it all up. Did they lose that much money on Rubicon? Just wait for Mad Men season 4 and Walking Dead season 1 DVD sales to make up for it.
shitfuck.
Ditch Betty!
While I’m not sure he’ll be pleased with the douche tag, the quemments page is:
http://www.nerdist.com/quemments
Is this where I put my quemment? I have been looking all over for a place to put one and have yet to find it. If this is the place here I go.
I used to think Chris Hardwick was a supreme douche, back in his Singled Out days, but then I saw Web Soup and was proven wrong. While he still exhibits his doucheness at times I have grown to love the Nerdist side. Damn you Chris Harwick!
Oh, the other thing I was wondering. If AMC specifically wants to cut two cast, I’m thinking they know who they want to cut. One of those articles suggested that the main stars, Hamm, Slattery, Hendricks, and Jones would be spared. I would bet you a vintage Pitfall cartridge that AMC is actually trying to axe Jones. The show veered away from her somewhat this last season, and I bet the network is probably just pushing to drop her altogether. Not that I would want that, but I bet that’s one of the cuts they want. Weiner is quoted as saying the cuts they want will make it “a very different show” from what it is, and that suggests to me that it’s not just 2 non-specific characters but 2 somewhat integral characters. I bet 1 one of their desired cuts is January Jones.
Renewal? Yay!
Over a year until new episodes? BOOOOOO!
It’s like waiting for the Sopranos all over again! I guess Weiner is familiar with that.
