The movie Moonwalkers plays on the great myth that Stanley Kubrick was hired by the U.S. government to fake the first moon landing in 1969. However, in this version of the story, that attempt goes horribly wrong, when the CIA Agent (played by Ron Perlman) tasked with hiring the famous director gets swindled by a band manager (Rupert Grint), who passes off his friend as Kubrick himself so the two can get, and wildly spend, the large sum of money the job paid.
“Do you really want to go back to your boss and tell him that you donât have Stanley Kubrick and you donât have the money? We must be the only hope you got.”
Moonwalkers, while based on a legend that causes very strong opinions and reactionsâit has literally led to blows, like when Buzz Aldrin punched a guy who said they were fakeâis actually a comedy, one that looks very much married to the swinging, drug-fueled world of the late 60s in which it is set. If you are going to tell a classic “fish-out-of-water/forced interaction of two very different types of worlds” story, Ron Perlman feels like an inspired casting choice, no?
Our own Scott Weinberg actually reviewed Moonwalkers this past March when it was part of the SXSW Festival, so make sure you check it out.
Moonwalkers is directed by first time director Antoine Bardou-Jacquet and was written by Dean Craig (Death at a Funeral).
