The Rocketeer movie may not have been judged an immediate hit in 1991, but those who saw it remembered it, and the character endured; once a cult classic comic character known only to fans of creator Dave Stevens, he got enough of a profile boost to stay consistently in the pop culture sphere. Funko finally made action figures a couple of years ago, and now Mondo shows the love with a gorgeous polystone statue.
You know this is the comics version because it includes Rocketeer Cliff Secord’s girlfriend Betty, loosely (but not that loosely) based on Bettie Page, who didn’t want to be involved with the film and was replaced by Jennifer Connolly’s “Jenny.” But this offers a double-treat for Betty lovers — for an extra $5 you can buy a Mondo exclusive version of the statue that comes with two interchangeable heads, so she can look happy or surprised. This version is only available until Friday at noon (central time).
Both versions feature semi-translucent flames, and the sculpting and artistic talents of Trevor Grove, Mara Ancheta, Simon Garcia, Eric Siebenaler, and Paul Roman Martinez. Neither version actually flies, so don’t be like my little cousin when he was five years old, throwing his Rocketeer bendy figure into the wall and exclaiming, “He fwied! He died!” This is for displaying and looking awesome all by itself. Especially when you look at it from above.
The 13.5 inch statue runs $200 (or $205) and is now available for pre-order, with fulfilment expected next fall. Or rather, third quarter — when dealing with a high-flying hero, one never wants to hear the word “fall,” am I right?
