Might SHERLOCK Be Headed for a One-Off Special?

When you have two stars as in-demand at the moment like Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, it can be hard to get them together for a long stretch of time to film some sleuthing. Freeman’s currently spending some time in the Northern Midwest (Fargo, oh ya), and Cumberbatch will next be back in WWII breaking some codes (in The Imitation Game), not to mention the fact that they’ve both been flying back and forth to Middle-Earth for various heroic or villainous questing. If you’ll recall, the third series of BBC’s Sherlock was heavily delayed due to the commitment of Freeman to The Hobbit films. And that was prior to the pair being everywhere you look.

So what of a fourth series of Sherlock? There has been no official word, but Den of Geek is reporting that Freeman appeared on a UK chat show hosted by Alan Carr (which will air on Channel 4 on Friday) and dropped a bit of a hint about what might be the next televised thing for Holmes and Watson.

“Mark Gatiss may beat me up, but there is an idea for this one-off special that’s such a good idea, and as I was listening to it I thought ‘we’ve just got to do this’. And I don’t know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately.” He later added, “it’s a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea. But I really don’t know when we are going to get to do it”.

A one-off special might sound like a step down to fans, but with the cast and crew all working on other heavily publicized and time-consuming projects, a single 90-minute episode might do well in its stead. If you really look at it, Sherlock has just been a collection of nine feature films anyway, so another will bring it to an even decalog. At any rate, regardless of how great an idea Mark Gatiss has, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting any new Sherlock for the foreseeable future.

How do you react to this? Will a single special for the sleuth be better than nothing or do you think they should wait until they can get a full three episodes? Talk about it in the comments below. And catch up on last series with my reviews of “The Empty Hearse,” “The Sign of Three,” and “His Last Vow.”

I’ll wait for another three episodes, but I’ll take any Cumberbatch I can get at this point.

  2. Finnese says:

    Anything for more Sherlock!

I’m so sick of time being the key factor for calling them “Feature Films”. They fucking aren’t, otherwise when I see a T.V. Series have an hour long special with a following episode, fuck-it, those are “Feature Films” as well! No they are fucking not. Length doesn’t make your damn bitchen video a “Feature Film”. Honestly, this reference came from Freeman getting grilled about there not being enough content and so he – a little irritatingly called them “Feature Films” to try and justify the lack of episodes. Time isn’t the factor in that label, jesus, now everyone is using it as an excuse. Doctor Who and Dawson’s Creek episodes are an hour long.

I’ll take them any way I can get them.
    (Steady…)

I rather wait for three more than have just one…… but I’m still dying inside…
