Microsoft and Xbox to Allow Cross-Network Play

Microsoft has finally announced a feature many console gamers have only dreamed of: cross-network play. This nifty new feature will allow Xbox gamers to not only play online with Windows 10 players, but also potentially PS4 players and PC users on other networks. Who said we couldn’t all be friends?

This is obviously huge news, but we need to simmer down a bit–Sony still hasn’t agreed to anything. And even if Sony does participate, developers will need to implement the feature in their games, which could take some time before we see it adopted across major titles. With that being said, Street Fighter V on the PS4 already supports cross-platform play with PC gamers.

The first title to support this feature is of course Rocket League. Microsoft also stated that there’s an “open invitation for other networks to participate as well,” so now the ball is in Sony’s court (or arena, in this case). Though, it seems like Sony has no choice but to make this happen. The company will look like the bad guy if it decides to go against the people’s will.

This has the potential to change the gaming landscape. If this is indeed implemented across the board, then players won’t have to worry where their friends are going in the next generation of home consoles. Yet there’s still a long ways to go before this feature becomes the norm. At least we can get excited that one of the major home consoles is setting down the framework to make this happen.

Do you think Sony will agree to allow its users to play online with Xbox One gamers? Would this make it harder to choose between the two consoles? Let us know in the comments below!
