DC Announces SUPERMAN Live-Action Prequel Series Starring Lois Lane and Lex Luthor

For the better part of the last two decades, Superman prequels have been all the rage on television. Later this year, Syfy is exploring life on the Man of Steel’s homeworld in Krypton, just seven years after Smallville finished its ten season run. Now it’s time to move to Metropolis with a brand new live-action series coming to DC’s upcoming streaming service.

DC has announced that Metropolis has been given a first season order of 13 episodes as it explores life in the City of Tomorrow before Clark Kent brings his famous alter ego to town. According to the official description, the show will follow Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as they “investigate the world of fringe science and expose the city’s dark and bizarre secrets.” If that sounds a bit like Fox’s Gotham, it’s probably not a coincidence. Metropolis is being produced by two of the men behind that series: John Stephens and Danny Cannon.

It makes sense to give Lois the leading role in this series, since she’s almost always been envisioned as a fearless reporter who is a worthy heroine on her own terms. Even Lex’s part isn’t necessarily a surprise, but it’s unclear if he’ll be an adversary to Lois or if they will be allies. Some of Lex’s most recent storylines in the comics sent him down a more heroic path, but he appears to be backsliding into villainy.

Metropolis will begin production later this year and it is expected to debut in 2019 on the currently unnamed DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service.
