Metallica Played Metallica Trivia Against a Superfan on Jimmy Kimmel

Last month, Metallica dropped their first record since 2008’s Death Magnetic—with great gusto, I might add. Just ahead of the release, the LA metal gods shared a music video for every song on the then-forthcoming album, Hardwired… To Self Destruct, and then they endeared us to their softer side, performing “Enter Sandman” on Jimmy Fallon with toy instruments. Last night Metallica paid a visit to the other late night Jimmy (Kimmel) to perform both new single “Atlas, Rise!” and the classic 1984 track, “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Then, as Pitchfork reports, the band played Metallica trivia with superfan, Dave. It’s worth noting that no band had ever beaten the superfan competitor on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! segment. Was history made last night? Read on, dear readers, because in the words of James Hetfield: “Nothing Else Matters.”

Dave Gren, a fireman from Cleveland, and his metal idols weren’t just playing for pride; for Dave, a beautiful, autographed ESP guitar was on the line. For Metallica: Dave’s wallet and all of its contents. Six questions, each worth ten points, were relayed from Kimmel to the contestants. The first to buzz in got the opportunity to answer. “In what year was Metallica inducted into the rock ‘n’ roll hall of fame?” went to Dave (2009). “At that hall of fame ceremony, which musician introduced the band?” went to Lars Ulrich. (Flea). The battle raged on for four more questions with Metallica ultimately doubling Dave’s score, making Jimmy Kimmel history and leaving a Cleveland firefighter penniless in Los Angeles.

Admittedly, the Metallica dudes are pretty nice, so they probably returned Dave’s wallet. They also invited him as their guest to a TBD show this coming year, so don’t feel too bad for Dave.

Could you beat Metallica in a Metallica trivia contest? Let us know in the comments.
