Metallica Performed an Intense “Moth into Flame” on THE TONIGHT SHOW

Metal legends Metallica were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, so it would be hard to blame them if they decided to just coast on their reputation from that point on. Just a year before that, the band had released Death Magnetic, their ninth album since their inception in 1981, but we haven’t really heard much new stuff from the group since then.

That changed last month, though, when Metallica came storming back with word of a new album, Hardwired… To Self Destruct. The album featured the kinetic new three-minute song “Hardwired,” an unusually short track for the band that nonetheless has all the intensity you’d come to expect from them. The album comes out on November 18, so the band is now in full promotional swing, taking the stage last night to perform the other new song they revealed, “Moth into Flame,” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

In their first televised performance in support of the upcoming album, Metallica was electric. Like “Hardwired” before it, “Moth To Flame” harkens back to the band’s thrash roots, with its relatively raw and punishing approach to fast and heavy metal music. They’re in their 50s now, but that doesn’t mean James Hetfield and company are slowing down at all.

Take a gander at the band’s performance above, and head here for details about Hardwired… To Self Destruct, a 12-track double LP. If the rest of the record is as propulsive and excellent as what we’ve been treated to so far, color us excited.
