After it was announced that director Paul Feig would be manning the ship in a female-centric reboot of Ghostbusters , many speculated that he’d probably cast the funny women he’s worked with before, most notably Melissa McCarthy. Her stardom really took off after her breakout role in the Feig-directed Bridesmaids and continued in The Heat and Spy, which is coming out in May. And it appears, The Hollywood Reporter maintains, that McCarthy has indeed been approached to play the lead in the ectoplasmic fun fest, but her involvement is still very much in the air.
McCarthy has been one of Hollywood’s most sought-after comedic actresses since 2011 when her performance in Bridesmaids garnered her universally rave reviews and even an Oscar nomination. Her feature film docket is filling up, not least because she and her husband-collaborator Ben Falcone, with whom she made the film Tammy, are going to make another movie called Michelle Darnell. And, if that doesn’t make her busy enough, she’s also the co-lead on the inexplicably popular CBS series (and they’re all inexplicably popular if you ask me) Mike & Molly.
For McCarthy to be able to star in Feig’s take on the paranormal comedy, she’ll need to make sure she’s free in June when cameras are set to start rolling. The HR article’s unnamed source says, while that’s certainly possible, it’s by no means a lock.
A lot of other actresses have had their names included in the conversation surrounding the new Ghostbusters reboot, including Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Rebel Wilson, Cecily Strong, and Jillian Bell. But at this point, nobody’s attached. Hopefully someone signs on soon so we can all start speculating and making fan art and things.
Would you be happy with a McCarthy-led Ghostbusters, or do you think Feig needs to find a new muse? Let us know in the comments below!
Nope. Just Nope. She’s the only actor that i can say i have never finished a movie with her in it. She only plays 1 part as far as I can tell and it does not fit as a Ghostbuster.
I can’t say that I’m a big fan of her. I have very mixed feelings about the whole movie and this doesn’t really help. It’s nothing against her, it’s just the fact that I am not a huge fan of directors who have “pet” actors and use them in every freaking movie. The only time that’s okay is if you’re Sam Raimi and you cast Bruce Cambell.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think she comes across as obnoxious, not funny. I would hate seeing her in a Ghostbusters movie reboot, and I think she would ruin the entire film.
NNNooooooooooo!!!!!
While I hope they don’t just do female versions of the same 4 characters I thought Sandra Bullock as Venkman, McCarthy as Ray, Kristen Wiig as Egon, and Maya Rudolph as Winston would be a great cast.
