2 Classic MEGA MAN Games Are Getting Re-Released On Cartridges

Here’s one thing that is undeniably true: Gamers still love classic Nintendo consoles. If you need proof of that, look no further than the hype surrounding the recent mini editions of the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super Nintendo. Here’s another fact: People also still love Mega Man, one of the most influential and storied video game franchises of all time. Evidence: They’re making a live-action Mega Man movie, and Mega Man games are always listed among the best on Nintendo’s early consoles.

In light of those truths, here’s some excellent news (especially if you still have your NES and SNES gathering dust in your basement somewhere): Capcom is teaming up with iam8bit to celebrate the Mega Man franchise’s 30th anniversary by re-releasing the NES game Mega Man 2 and the SNES title Mega Man X on their original cartridge platforms (via Polygon). Yes, Capcom really is releasing a NES and a SNES game in 2018, and for that, we’re thankful.

Of course, these special editions, both of which are limited to 8,500 copies each, are different than the originals: The Mega Man X cart is a sharp-looking white with a blue label, while Mega Man 2 will come in two different shades of blue, with either variety being randomly inserted into boxes, meaning you’ll have to get lucky to score the transparent cart, of which only 1,000 are being produced. Both packages will come with the sort of special goodies you would expect, like a “premium instruction booklet” and “retro pack-in surprises,” so even if you already have the old carts somewhere, this feels like a collectors’ item that could be worth your while. Each game sells for $100 on the iam8bit website and will ship in late September.

Are you going to pick up these re-releases? What other old-school titles do you think deserve to receive a fancy new revival like this? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
