High school is the worst. Just the mention of it is enough to make me think about a film as a horror movie. The Sub, from indie filmmaker Dan Samiljan, isn’t only a horror short though — it’s going the horror-comedy route. The story follows Mae Zalinski as she reluctantly accepts a position as a substitute teacher at her old rival high school. Things there aren’t perfect; no, evil happenings afoot. Mae bonds with a student named Penny, and they work together to attempt to survive high school. Samiljan compares The Sub’s tone to films like Ghostbusters and Shaun of the Dead.
Samiljan turned to Kickstarter to fund the project, and after almost a month, the short film is just about 75% funded. Chosen as a Kickstarter staff pick, The Sub will have a professional cast and crew (including a practical monster from an Oscar-nominated special effects team), and we get to exclusively reveal four cast members: Zoe Jarman (The Mindy Project), Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Robbi Morgan Walberg (Friday the 13th [1980]), and Barrett Carnahan (The Thundermans). They’ll be joining Carrie Wampler (Austin & Ally).
Feeling sold? You have one week to back The Sub on Kickstarter, and you can support the project on a number of levels. Give $1 for a high-five from Dan, give $25 to get a digital download of the short, or go crazy and fork over $10,000 to be a producer with all sorts of perks. So many options!
Are you looking forward to The Sub? Let me know in the comments.
