Max von Sydow Joins GAME OF THRONES Season 6

Over the weekend, word broke that Deadwood star Ian McShane has joined the cast of HBO’s Game of Thrones for the upcoming sixth season. But McShane isn’t only veteran actor coming to the series.

Film icon Max von Sydow has signed on for Game of Thrones Season 6, and he is reportedly already on the set and shooting his scenes. Von Sydow will be taking over the role of The Three-Eyed Raven, the new mentor of Bran Stark who was briefly glimpsed in the closing minutes of the fourth season finale. The Three-Eyed Raven was formerly played by Struan Rodger.

Von Sydow’s cinematic career stretches back over five decades and several memorable roles, including Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon; Blofeld in Never Say Never Again; Father Merrin in The Exorcist; Joubert in Three Days of the Condor; and the voice of Vigo the Carpathian in Ghostbusters II.

More recently, von Sydow has appeared in The Tudors, Shutter Island, Robin Hood, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens in a currently unrevealed role.

Both von Sydow and McShane are said to have crucial roles in the new season of Game of Thrones, but their screen time will reportedly be limited. HBO has yet to announce which role McShane will take on the series.

Game of Thrones Season 6 is expected to premiere in Spring 2016 on HBO.
