First-Look Images from MARY POPPINS RETURNS are Practically Perfect

Grab a spoonful of sugar and pick up a jaunty umbrella because it’s time to celebrate a la Mary Poppins. The magical nanny is set to reappear in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns. Emily Blunt is holding the carpet bag this time as Mary, who’s coming into the lives of the Banks children once again. The Banks children from the 1964 film are now adults, so Mary’s around to bring some wonder to Michael and his kids after Michael’s wife dies. Entertainment Weekly (EW) visited the set and returned with plot details and first look photos.

Photos such as this one depicting a joyful looking scene with Mary, the new Banks children, and Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s Jack:

This scene is part of the musical number, “Trip a Little Light Fantastic.”

The continued adventures of Mary are inspired by selections from P.L. Travers’ books. She penned eight different stories about the enigmatic character, and they feature adventures ranging from the bizarre to the downright weird. The original film only scraped the surface, but Mary Poppins Returns will dig deeper and jump around in the wonderfully unbelievable stories. The film will go places such as Big Ben, the ocean, and more in new songs—and yes, there will be animated dancing penguins.

We don’t have images of those penguins yet, but take a look at more Jack and Mary:

From what I’m seeing in these images, Mary Poppins Returns has whimsy, show-stopping costumes, and a little something special. You can flip through more photos showcasing the characters and concept art over at EW’s website and in their upcoming June 9 issue.

Mary Poppins Returns will swoop into theaters in December 2018. Which characters are you most looking forward to meeting? Shout ’em out in the comments.
