For over 50 years, Mary Jane Watson has been one of Spider-Manâs most important supporting characters. And for nearly twenty years, Mary Jane was Peter Parkerâs wife…before Marvel retconned their marriage away.
With Mary Janeâs role in Spider-Man greatly diminished, writer Brian Michael Bendis has added her to the supporting cast of Invincible Iron Man as of the fourth issue.
“They know each other,” said Bendis. “She used to live in Avengers Tower. But thatâs all I’m going to say for now because what kind of relationship they end up having is a big part of what I would like people to buy the book for. But what I can tell you is that it is new territory for both Tony and Mary Jane. And that is pretty exciting to write.”
Do they know each other? Didnât the retcon in âOne More Dayâ negate the memories of Spider-Manâs secret identity from all but a handful of people? If so, then why would Tony remember Mary Jane at all?
Bendis explained his idea to add Mary Jane to the new Iron Man book while speaking to Marvel.com:
We were at one of our glorious Marvel publishing retreats and certain characters got brought up, sometimes almost accidentally, and I found out that nobody had anything going on with Mary Jane. I sat with that for a while and I always go to this place in my head where I [wonder] what the most interesting thing I would like to see that character do now and it fell right into the ideas I was already cooking for Tony Stark.
While no one is saying that Mary Jane will be Tony Starkâs newest love interest…does anyone really think that Marvel wonât at least tease that possibility? Itâs been nearly a decade since Peter and Mary Jane were a couple, and she was most recently dating a firefighter named Pedro in the relaunched Amazing Spider-Man series. But that probably wonât be true for much longer.
Mary Jane makes her debut as an Iron Man cast member in Invincible Iron Man # 4 this December.
