Marvel’s New Female Superhero is MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR

This fall, the Marvel Universe will introduce us to its newest female superhero (and her 30 foot Tyrannosaurus companion) in the new series, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

Created in 1978 by Jack Kirby, Devil Dinosaur roamed an alternate timeline with his caveman companion Moon Boy. This new title will bring Devil into the present day Marvel Universe, and this time will be teamed up with the super-genius mind of teenage Lunella Lafayette, Moon Girl.

Moon Girl

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-writers Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare describe Lunella as a “female Inspector Gadget, only this time she knows what she’s doing.” This intellect of hers will also cause her feelings of isolation from the other people around her—something the writers are also excited to explore. Lunella also happens to carry the Inhuman gene inside of her, and while not triggered yet, she plans to control what happens to her when it does.

Both writers are also excited about the creative freedom they have with writing such an obscure character. They are not held to the same continuity constraints they would be with, say, a Spider-Man or Avengers title. This will help them in their goal to make this book accessible to fans of all ages. They want to give it a “Pixar feel”—meaning adults and children can laugh at the same joke, even if it’s for different reasons.

Artist Natacha Bustos is “tremendously honored” to be a part of this book—getting the chance to add Lunella to the likes of Kamala Khan and Miles Morales before her—and diversifying Marvel‘s character line-up.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will be released this fall from Marvel Comics.

So what do you think? Are you going to add Lunella to your pull list? Is Marvel once again taking a step in the right direction when it comes to diversity? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments below.
