Marvel’s CLOAK AND DAGGER Goes to Series at Freeform

For the last five years, Marvel TV has been trying to bring Cloak and Dagger to television. Now, it’s finally happening at Freeform with a straight-to-series order!

Cloak and Dagger’s new series will follow the titular teenage duo as they deal with the sudden onset of their superpowers while attempting to make their way through the world. The story broke at Variety, which notes that Cloak and Dagger’s TV incarnations will play up the interracial romance between the two leads.

Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan created Cloak and Dagger back in 1982 as supporting characters in the Spectacular Spider-Man series. In Marvel’s comic book universe, Tyrone Johnson befriended Tandy Brown shortly before they were both kidnapped and experimented on. In the aftermath, Tyrone became Cloak, and he had the power to use his body as a gateway to the darkness dimension. Tandy gained the power to generate “light daggers” and an unnatural luminescence as the super-heroine known as Dagger.

Cloak and Dagger went on to headline their own comic book series and even joined the X-Men a few years ago. However, Cloak and Dagger were subsequently established as not being mutants, despite an earlier story that stated they both were. Perhaps that was Marvel’s way of ensuring that Cloak and Dagger didn’t fall under 20th Century Fox’s X-Men film rights.

The Cloak and Dagger TV series doesn’t currently have a writer/showrunner, but ABC Studios and Marvel TV are reportedly looking to fill that position in the near future. Presumably the series would be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
