Marvel’s AGENT CARTER Renewed For Second Season, S.H.I.E.L.D Spinoff Shelved

It’s happening! It’s really happening! ABC has given the go-ahead for a second season of everyone’s favorite operative, Agent Carter! It would seem that someone with their finger on the greenlight button heard Dan Casey’s plea, because we’re getting MORE PEGGY CARTER!

Peggy’s television fate has been the source of much debate over the last few months. The 8-episode series was incredibly well-recieved among critics and fans, but it never quite clinched the ratings numbers to place it into the “Renew this already, duh!” category. Its compacted number of episodes allowed the series to produce consistently well-told stories without ever having to venture into the shaky territory of filler episodes, though. In the first season, we saw Peggy reunite with the Howling Commandos (last seen in Captain America: The First Avenger); we were shown The Red Room, the Russian training facility where the Black Widow program originated, for the first time; we got to watch Peggy deftly handle Dominic Cooper’s Howard Stark; and we were treated to a slew of action sequences where Carter absolutely obliterated the competition. Seriously, Haley Atwell is a universal treasure.

It came as no surprise that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D also saw itself getting renewed, but that good news has not been extended to the Mockingbird/Lance Hunter-centered spinoff starring Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood. It seems that spinoff has been shelved for the time being. I don’t think I’d count it out entirely, but things do not look good for now since it was to be a contemporaneous companion piece to S.H.I.E.L.D. It’s a no-brainer that Mockingbird and Hunter will show up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. again, though, so don’t think you’ve seen the last of those characters. In non-Marvel cancellation news that bodes well for the future MCU, Emily VanCamp’s starring role in ABC’s Revenge has come to an end, leaving her with more time to play Agent 13! More Peggy Carter, more Sharon Carter, more kickass ladies in the MCU — it’s a good time to be a Marvel fan!

While you’re waiting to get your Agent Carter fix, keep your queue button and Netflix watch lists on the look out for A.K.A. Jessica Jones, possibly coming later this year or in early 2016. Krysten Ritter as the eponymous character in the second Netflix-exclusive Marvel series, following Daredevil and preceding Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Combined, the four series will serve as an introduction to The Defenders, who we c0uld potentially see joining the big screen with Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2.
