Marvel May Have Found Its Scarlet Witch & Rocket Raccoon

Like casting rumors through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives. The union members of the rumor mill have been working overtime to break the latest scoops on who Marvel is eyeing for coveted roles like Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, and, finally, they have hit paydirt. Multiple sources are confirming that the House of Ideas is deep in negotiations with some big name actors to portray their movie star metahumans.

Rocket Raccoon

Ever since the first footage of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the Internet has whipped itself into a frenzy trying to figure out who would be playing its two CGI superheroes, Groot the living tree and the Guardian of the Keystone Quadrant himself, Rocket Raccoon. Vin Diesel has been heavily rumored for the part of Groot and even posted an image to his Facebook page of the wooden warrior, but naught has been confirmed yet. Meanwhile, the self-proclaimed “big game hunter of scoops,” El Mayimbe of Latino Review, bagged himself an African elephant by breaking the news that Bradley Cooper is in negotiations to voice the cantankerous critter. While Latino Review has been blasted by some for rumormongering in the past, the reports have been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter and several other outlets, so in the words of Kenneth the Page, “Haters to the left.” Although I’d always pictured someone like Kurt Russell in my head, this seems like solid casting to round out what’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting, dynamic casts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Scarlet Witch

By now, it’s no secret that the magic-wielding, tiara-clad daugher of Magneto, Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, will be joining the team alongside her speedster brother Quicksilver in Joss Whedon’s Avengers 2. Although Whedon confirmed in an interview with us that she won’t be wearing her ornate headpiece, we’ve all been left wondering who would take up her maroon mantle in the follow-up film. Although this is less of a sure thing than Cooper’s casting, Bleeding Cool was first to report that Elizabeth Olsen is being heavily considered for the role of Scarlet Witch after Irish actress Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) passed on the project. Olsen, who has shown considerable acting chops in Martha Marcy May Marlene and Liberal Arts, would evidently need to adopt a European accent for the role of Ms. Maximoff. Personally, I’m a fan of Olsen’s work and I think she can definitely rise to the challenge, but it will be formidable considering how stacked the rest of the cast is with proven crowd pleasers. Worst case scenario, she can go full on House of M and erase all traces of bad press, right?

So, there you have it, film fiends. What do you think of these potential casting picks? Do you agree? If not, who would you rather see? Let us know in the comments below or hit me up on Twitter.

To Logan: While you’re heart is in the right place, the reason she can’t say “No more mutants” is Fox has a deal that only they can say mutants in the X-men movies and Avengers can’t. And While Disney can choose to not renew their deal when the time comes, that only occurs when Fox hasn’t made an X-Men movie in two years. Which explains the bum rush to do Days of future past. Having Quicksilver in both just means in Avengers he’s never called a mutant but instead a “unique individual” and in Days of Future Past he is never called an Avenger. But the day it reverts back will be a much easier day for writers of Comic Book Movies.

  2. I think the two would be the perfect ones to cast in those roles. Elizabeth Olsen is a wonderful actress, she has performed well in her roles. This would sure help her get out from under her very famous older sisters shadow huh. Bradley Cooper can play cocky well but he is a versatile actor that can play various types of roles, why not play a raccoon?

I only have on question on my mind Why does The Scarlett Witch only date robots? Maybe its daddy issues.

  3. Logan says:

Sorry Joey but you’re wrong. Disney doesn’t need to rescue the rights of characters they own, and that 20th Century Fox are basically just renting. That and the fact that Fox as said they are only using Quicksilver in the next movie doesn’t mean that the owners can’t use said characters, PERIOD. As I see it when the time comes for Fox to renew their contract with Disney, Disney doesn’t have to renew the contract and movie rights revert back to Disney. Thus no rescue of the rights needed to hear her scream “NO MORE MUTANTS!”

  4. Eric says:

I love the sound of both of these! Elizabeth Olsen is super talented and B. Coops would totally nail the cocky/charming badass-quality that Rocket Raccoon needs. Fingers crossed for both of these!

Also, how insane is it that GOTG has been filming for almost two months and they’re STILL getting casting nailed down? I mean, I know that it’s VO roles that are all done in post but still… Crazy.

  5. Eric Bell says:

You forgot to mention she is in Silent House and did a phenomenal job acting in it.

  6. RG says:

Let’s not encourage El Mayimbe. The guy got a couple hardly-exclusive scoops a few years ago and now he’s making huge claims about 2015 movies, probably just trying to make a buck for a couple more years before he shuffles off.

  7. Joey Guziejka says:

Disney/Marvel would need to rescue the rights to the X-Men before they let Wanda utter the phrase “No more mutants”… 🙂
