Marvel Goes Gritty in new DAREDEVIL Trailers

When it comes to Marvel and its TV/Films, “dark and gritty” aren’t the first words that come to mind. Yes, the second Thor movie was called The Dark World, but all the major battles took place during the day (I may have misread what the title means). Well, “dark and gritty” are about to become part of the Marvel vocabulary if these new trailers for Daredevil are any indication.

The first series in Marvel’s deal with Netlfix, Daredevil takes the story of blind lawyer Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), whose accident that blinded him also gave enhanced his other senses to superhuman levels. He uses these gifts to fight crime at night as a vigilante.

The two new trailers give a little more insight into the plot of the show, starting with Matt being blinded and his training with Stick (Scott Glenn), to his eventual confrontation with the man who wants to “cleanse the city so it can be reborn,” Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). More is seen of Matt’s law partner Foggy Nelson (Eldon Henson), and the introduction of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) seems to be more as a crime vicitim instead of the mere job applicant in the comics. Clare Temple (Rosario Dawson), who was a different character in the comics, seems to be taking on the role of Night Nurse for the TV series.

While the Marvel films have shyed away from anything above PG-13, Daredevil seems to embrace its home on Netflix, and if the fight scenes in these trailers are any indication, the TV-MA rating will be much deserved.

I watch the Marvel movies for the fun aspect, but I am looking forward to seeing how they handle a more grounded, dark story, something they have shyed away for so many years. A change of pace can always be a good thing. Even the costume has grown on me. The scene with him standing with his fists wrapped in rope did look pretty cool. It almost made me forget he looks like the Daredevil from The Trial of the Incredible Hulk.

Here’s hoping we get to see the horns at the end of the show like everyone is theorizing.
