Marvel Delays SECRET WARS Finale Again

Back in August, Marvel Comics announced that its Secret Wars crossover event would get an extra issue to finish up its storyline. Secret Wars # 9 was originally slated to be out next month, but fans are just going to have to wait if they want to read the final issue.

Marvel has revealed that Secret Wars # 9 has been pushed back a few weeks. It will now hit comic book stores on January 6, 2016. The Secret Wars miniseries began last May as the culmination of writer Jonathan Hickman’s long-running storyline that led into the current All-New, All-Different Marvel relaunch. Artist Esad Ribic has illustrated every issue of the primary Secret Wars miniseries.

In part because of the Secret Wars delay, Marvel has avoided directly referencing its conclusion during the All-New, All-Different titles that take place eight months later. However, the fates of the Fantastic Four’s Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman remain up in the air, as neither character has appeared since the relaunch.

Secret Wars 9 Cover
As depicted in Alex Ross’ cover to Secret Wars # 9, Mr. Fantastic will confront Doctor Doom in the finale with the fate of Marvel’s multiverse at stake. At the beginning of the Secret Wars event, Doom stole the powers of the Beyonders and became God Emperor Doom, the ruler of the patchwork planet known as Battleworld.

While it seems likely that Doom will be defeated by Mr. Fantastic in the final issue of Secret Wars, he has recently popped up in Brian Michael Bendis’ Invincible Iron Man series with his face restored. That’s a feat that Doom couldn’t previously accomplish even with his God-like powers in Secret Wars.
