Every good hero needs a good villain, and Marvel’s Daredevil resident scary bald guy is no exception to the rule. When they announced that Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, the notorious (and hefty) crime lord in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, would be Matt Murdock’s nemesis on the first season of the new Netflix series, we were understandably intrigued. The Kingpin idea was made even more exciting by the announcement that Vincent D’Onofrio would be playing said villain, since he’s one of those actors who is endlessly watchable onscreen AND can be creepy as all get out. (Not just partial get out.)
Despite seeing the back of his head in the Daredevil trailer about a month ago, we didn’t know exactly what he’d look like…until now! Netflix has released two images of D’Onofrio as Fisk to satiate our interest in what exactly a bald Vincent D’Onofrio looks like. Pretty similar to the one with hair, actually.
So, there’s your bad guy, ladies and gentlemen. But, more intriguing perhaps is the blurb they released in the press release about how the character fits into the story:
“The shadowy figure behind organized crime in Hellâs Kitchen, Wilson Fisk has one mission in mind: to save Hellâs Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter the cost. This immediately puts him at odds with Matt Murdockâs vigilante alter-ego, who also seeks to protect the city â but sees the criminal element as the root of the cityâs problems. Central to this conflict is that Fisk truly believes heâs doing good for Hellâs Kitchen and at times may seem more of a hero to its people than Daredevil. Intelligent, complex and physically imposing, Wilson Fisk is the perfect foil for Matt Murdock, and the two will collide dramatically in Marvelâs Daredevil.”
So, Fisk is going to be a local hero and Daredevil’s going to be the blight on the city. At least for a while. That’ll really solidify Matt Murdock as the underdog right from the beginning, making him the closest the current MCU has to a Batman figure. I like it!
All 13 episodes of Netflix’s first Marvel collaboration, Daredevil, will drop on April 10th at 12:01am, so start planning your sick day excuses now.
