Marvel Cowboys Up

:

Marvel Entertainment, LLC, a global character-based entertainment licensing company, and the Dallas Cowboys announced a collaboration that joins renowned Super Heroes from the Marvel Universe with one of the premier franchises in National Football League (NFL) history. Through an agreement that enables the Dallas Cowboys to license Marvel’s Super Heroes, the team will develop co-branded merchandise featuring Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, and many other Super Heroes decked out in Cowboys’ team colors, logos and jerseys.

Okay, so, this is a typical marketing deal, but it’s Marvel and it’s the Dallas Cowboys. The Dallas freakin’ Cowboys. They’re putting Spider-Man and Iron Man and the other Marvel franchise characters into Cowboys gear. They’re proclaiming Cowboys fans as “Super Fans.”

Now, this won’t go over well with rival fans. Like, for example, me. I’m a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles (insert indignant Michael Vick comment here — yeah, I’m with you, but…), and the Cowboys are the Hated Enemy, the Evil Empire. How can Captain America or the Fantastic Four be fighting on the side of Jerry Jones, of The Star and that mega-mall they call a stadium? And how can any self-respecting Eagles, Cowboys, or Giants fan be happy buying Marvel character merchandise or queueing up for the latest big-screen adaptation if they know it’s aligned right there in the backfield with Marion Barber?

Well, okay, it’s just a merch thing. Tony Stark won’t be fumbling snaps for America’s Team; Tony Romo can handle that. Assuming, that is, there is a season. And we can overlook this unfortunate alliance the same way we can’t hold it against, oh, I don’t know, say, whoever Aon is because they’re on Manchester United’s jersey, if we don’t like Manchester United, which is up there with the Yankees and Cowboys in the Evil Empire image category. It’s only business, right? Right. But it’s still distressing to see some of the most beloved superheroes in comics take a side in the NFL, let alone THAT side.

The Marvel/Dallas Cowboys collection for infants, kids, and adults will include t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, caps and onesies.

Onesies! They’re bringing this blasphemy to the innocents, the infants. This cannot stand. DC, it’s your move. Just a request: not the Raiders, please.

  1. My brother suggested I would possibly like this web site.
He was once totally right. This put up actually made my day.
You cann’t imagine simply how a lot time I had spent for this info! Thank you!

  2. Brandon says:

WTF?! Now the Cowboys have gone too far! I guess Jimmy Jones shot his wad on that Huge TV @ Cowboys Stadium. What’s Next YU GI OH? I don’t like Super Heroes being associated with criminals. Keep the Convicts out of ComicCon!

  3. wow. fuck this with an adamantium claw.

  4. Erin says:

“Tony Stark won’t be fumbling snaps for America’s Team; Tony Romo can handle that.”

As a Cowboys fan I’d just like to say: No. No, he really can’t.

  5. esdeem says:

The other day at our local Wal-Mart, I noticed they had a bunch of Marvel shirts tied in with the Oklahoma City Thunder. While it’s a pretty natural fit(Thor is the God of Thunder, after all), I can only imagine what Marvel fans in Seattle must think of that.

  6. Haggis the Exploder says:

This just seems… uh… weird. Jerry Jones would seem like the perfect Marvel super villain. Kinda like their version of Lex Luthor.

  7. Marcus J says:

I cant believe no one went with the obvious “Captain America’s Team” reference.

  8. Lindsay says:

As a resident of Dallas and a former employee of Aon, I shall keep these shirts right next to my Manchester United jersey.

  9. for some reason this feels like Bugs Bunny and Taz in hiphop gear…just wrong

  10. John W says:

    WHAT THE FUCK!!!

  11. D. Kromwell says:

If it was the Jets or Giants, I could see it. I mean, Cap is from Brooklyn. While I could forgive him being like a Dodgers fan…

    The cowgirls?? No way.

  12. Jeff Whaley says:

wait can you buy a Gotham Bears jersey? cause i so want one now

  13. GabyYYZ says:

There’s always DC comics, except for the fact their main heroes don’t live in any friggin known city (The Gotham Bears or the Metropolis Giants anyone?)

  14. I’m from the great state of Texas however I don’t care about sports at all. Can someone please inform me why everyone hates the Cowboys. I hate them aswell but only because everyone talks about them during football season and pretty much nothing else. I’m glad for the lockout.

  15. Chuck says:

Die hard redskins fan from Dallas here… Just another reason to hate the cowboys every bit as much as I love the redskins.

  16. Jake says:

The Cowboys are “America’s Team” in the sense that fans of every team EXCEPT the Cowboys HATES the Cowboys. Bad financial decision, Marvel….you’ve given me a 2nd reason to boycott Captain America (1st reason: it looks like it sucks).

  17. Matt says:

I’ve gotta agree with everybody pointing out that most of the Marvel Universe seems to be centered around New York, so this would make more sense with the Giants or the (ugh) Jets.
Sadly, I can’t think of any superheroes from Indiana. Wait a second…
Google to the rescue! Bucky/Winter Soldier/New Cap is from Shelbyville! Cap should be rooting for the Colts!

  18. Rich says:

But….they’re all from New York. Why not shoot for a deal with the Jets or Giants? Hell, even the Bills! Actually, no, the Bills would be a horrible idea. Sorry I even mentioned it.

  19. LURIMO says:

The only thing better would have be some DC superheroes like my all-time favorite Batman sporting the blue and silver! All the haters keep hating; I will be enjoying! GO COWBOYS!

  20. Jeff Whaley says:

i’m not a fan of this, but for the opposite reason. I’m a huge cowboys fan, but i think it would be better if they were collaborating with DC. I’d love to see Superman wearing a Troy Aikman jersey. and on a final note… GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOOO!!!!!!

  21. Bo Blackbuirn says:

Obviously, this is a Skrull conspiracy to undermine faith in America’s favorite sport.

  22. Wade says:

I find this more amusing than anything else. I am actually surprised that this kind of mixed brand comics thing has not already been done as far as sports franchises. Maybe not as rolled out as this, but on a smaller level. I mean, Marvel licences its stuff out all the time, name brand cereals, fast foods, various name brand candies, etc. etc. So the fact that this is done is not unheard of, although it may be one of the bigger things Marvel has gotten into.

But why not look at it from the other direction. As opposed to Marvel characters being co-opted by the NFL, look at it more as Marvel actually capturing or solidify a new base. It’s not the Cowboys running rampant. The NFL is not getting into comics or stealing from Marvel. But Marvel is grabbing up some of the NFL licensing cash, of which the Cowboys is one of the largest earners.

Plus, the shirts are not very good. I’m guessing they’re being marketed for 12 year olds or something.

  23. Adam says:

Cap seems like a baseball guy to me… Spidey would probably be a Giants fan. And Wolverine is a Canadian so obviously prefers Hockey.

  24. Felicia says:

Dijetu, I couldn’t have said it better.

  25. Eric says:

As a fan of Marvel characters and a PURE HATER of sports I HATE THIS I HATE THIS I HATE THIS.

  26. Sean says:

This is flat out retarded! Is this the down side to Disney owning Marvel? They make retarded decisions with sports teams (a la the Anaheim Angels & Mighty Ducks).

  27. Geoff says:

How is Ben Grimm not a Jets fan?

  28. fryematte says:

If any of the super heros were sports fans they would definitely root for NY teams. except for wolverine he would be a big canadian hockey guy.

  29. dijetu says:

Wait. Isn’t there something more smarmy at play? Could this perhaps be seen as an attempt at culling the nostalgia dollar? Well, certainly, but Dallas is underestimating the nerd classes. There will be revolt. Be the first to Threadless your own nerd-freedom counter revolutionary sports team T-shirt. Let this be the bleeding edge in the front to reclaim nerd culture! Wolverine women’s lacrosse team shirts for the masses!

Down with organized sport leaching off our cred!
Down with hipster douche bags skanking up the joint with nostalgic references they can’t understand!
Down with The Man making a buck off the sweat of Stan Lee’s hallowed brow!

  30. Thomas says:

I could see Superman wearing a Pats jersey. Easily, I could see that.

  31. Tokkan says:

Wouldn’t Wolverine be more of a CFL fan anyways? Cheering for BC Lions or the Edmonton Eskimos? *grin*

(Or, for NFL stuff, the Jets or the Giants, I guess)

  32. Gabriel says:

Perhaps the hero are doing this as a way to infiltrate one of the larger criminal organizations in America. The level of crime, both violent and non-violent commited by professional athletes and the businesses that own the teams is breathtaking. Rape and cheating the rules just being the first two to pop to mind. Oh and animal cruelty. Love dogs? Then don’t torture and kill them for fun.

  33. Hunter says:

You guys don’t know this, but back in the 80s, Marvel put out a couple of comic books that were set in and around Dallas…one was with the X-Men at the State Fair of Texas and the other was Spider-man hanging out with the Dallas Cowboys. The books were given out in the Dallas Morning News as a supplement…so there’s a history of collaboration between Big D and Marvel.

    Nuff said

  34. Kip says:

Who would the heroes fight for? The richest corporation that could pay them! It’s just the corporations man, buying our heroes man..man

  35. Perry, as another Eagles fan I can’t believe how much Captain America hates our freedom. Our freedom to hate the Cowboys that is. Plus, who figured sports and comics culture would work together? Until I can get a Union Jack/Arsenal shirt anyway, I say “not me, sir!”

  36. Billy says:

This is just phase 1 in the return of NFL Superpro. 😉

  37. jay says:

wow !listen cowboys just because you suck at foot ball doesn’t mean can have superhero make you seem cool.

  38. Manny says:

    As a die hard Redskins fan I don’t approve…….I don’t…approve……not one bit.
