Marvel Comics Details December’s S.H.I.E.L.D. #1

Hey, remember that S.H.I.E.L.D. comic Marvel revealed over the weekend? It’s got an official solicitation in advance of its December release date.

According to a press release, S.H.I.E.L.D. will feature Agent Coulson recruiting humans and supers for all sorts of adventures in and around the Marvel Universe, dragging more aspects of the Marvel Cinematic U into the 616. So that means the book can pull from heavy hitters like Wolverine (you know, when he’s done being dead), to second-stringers like Cloak and Dagger.

It sounds like they’ve essentially rebranded the long-defunct Marvel Team-Up with a side of Agent Coulson thrown in for good measure. Which is great, because Mark Waid (Daredevil) is writing the book, and if you want one person plumbing the depths of your shared universe’s range of strange, underused, and interesting characters, it’s Waid.

During Comic-Con, I had a chance to attend the Marvel Next Big Thing panel, where Waid dished on some of the story possibilities for a S.H.I.E.L.D. book. Waid is a huge fan of the Agent Coulson character, describing him as a massive superhero fanboy who just happens to bury it all under a deadpan delivery. Sounds about right.

The book won’t have a regular artist, instead bringing in new talent for each issue which will be one and done according to Waid during Comic-Con. Weird detail: the press release doesn’t mention the done-in-one aspect of the book. Is that something Marvel is backing away from or was that just an oversight. Waid is at his best when he’s crafting interconnected, long-form stories with lots of little payoffs, but he does a mean single issue too.

Carlos Pacheco will supply the interiors for the first issue with Mike Deodato on the cover. Chris Sprouse and Alan Davis have lined up to handle art for future issues.

If Waid’s on the book, I’m in. The man is the BEST writer in comics. He really gets these characters
