Oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man: BBC One and PBS are likely to get a Christmas special centered around everyone’s favorite iteration of Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock. But before you start preparing the ticker tape parade, you should be fair-warned that the sleuthing duo’s return won’t be until Christmas 2015, because the boys that play Holmes and Watson are just too goddamn busy. Harumph!
Speaking to The Telegraph, Dr. Watson â also known as Martin Freeman â spoke candidly and in a way that may or may not upset the series’ producers and writers, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.
The actor explained that there seems to only be a limited amount of time where the boys are available to film, likely resulting in nothing more than a one-off episode. “If that’s going to be a special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas,” Freeman explained. “A Christmas special. That’s what I understand.” Martin then reiterated that filming in early 2015 looks “pretty likely.”
He also revealed a bit of a spoiler (at least for those of you unaware of just what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did, trajectory-wise, with his iconic and beloved characters): Mary will most likely die sometime pretty soon.
“While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow … what Conan Doyle did. So he [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably sheâll die,” said Freeman. So, uh, Merry Christmas?
